BIG OFFSHORE SAILFISH FLIES (Bait fish deceivers)

You have to offer the fish something that makes it feel it is worth chasing. A big sailfish is not going to eat a small fly you would use to catch a bonefish. Offshore flies should be big with an overall length starting from about 6". A large lefty's deceiver style of fly works well.

If you look inside a sailfish's mouth you will find that it and other billfish had a softer area in the upper jaw than the lower jaw. This meant that a fly would have a better chance of a hook-up if the hook point rode up. This has lead to the development of the tandem hooked large fly with rear hook turned down eyed so that the hook points up.

• The blue green mackerel imitation deceiver pattern is used when the fish seem to be feeding on small bait fish.
• The Orange or Red and white attractor patterns work well when the fish do not seem to be hungry and have to be teased to strike.
