Management Philosophy
I enjoy problem solving and like the challenge of trying to impose order on what at first sight may appear to be confusion. I've worked at Financial Director level for the last 6 years, specialising in the problems of organisations which are in difficulties, whether they stem from management or systems deficiciencies. And having worked in a wide range of businesses, I've gained great experience of change management and systems implementation.
However, I have learned that change has a tendency to engender resistance at every level from the Board downwards: or while there may be recognition that it is needed, many are reluctant to accept changes to their own working practices. Through experience gained from my interim contracts, therefore, I know that it is no use devising superlative management reforms without the psychological and communication skills necessary to sell them to those affected.
Having worked in different business sectors, I am familiar with a range of computer systems. On starting an assignment, I look to see how the system is operated because it ought to be making life easy for its users. But very often a system drives its users rather than the other way round: so I try to ascertain its capabilities, having frequently found that it can, for example, produce required management reports which are being compiled manually. I also pay attention to the exception reports produced as the system is routinely updated, because very often they are ignored with the result that errors go unnoticed until a crisis arises some months later.
And, of course, I expect to initiate and oversee the staff training neccessary to implement the procedures which I have introduced.
