I have traced our GARRATT ancestors back to George GARRATT born Swannington, Leics, 1787. He was a framework knitter who settled in Melbourne, Derbyshire, and later Derby where the family worked in the silk industry. George's parentage is proving elusive. The spelling of this surname is very variable and may appear as GARRATT, GARATT, GARRAT, GARRETT etc. The surname is not uncommon in the UK, but we would be interested to hear from anyone whose GARRATT ancestors (whatever spelling) have a connection with any of the places mentioned above.
