Sarah GRAY's sampler, 1837Our earliest known ancestor, William GRAY was for several years a Gardener at Wallingwells (near Worksop, Notts) before settling in West Stockwith circa 1775. West Stockwith is in the parish of Misterton on the Nottinghamshire / Lincolnshire border. A description of Misterton in 1853 can be found here. An old family bible has recently come to light which indicates that earlier still he had been living in Huntingdonshire.

William's son Taylor Stephen GRAY was a Gardener and Fishmonger in West Stockwith. The next generation included a Smith/Innkeeper, a Grocer, a Fisherman and three Mariners, including our ancestor William who became Master of a ship carrying cargo between Gainsborough and Newcastle. Brother Stephen was a shareholder in and Master of a coastal ship; he later became an Innkeeper and Steam Tug operator at Hull.

An outline of our GRAY family tree is available here. We would be interested to hear from anyone whose GRAY ancestors have a connection with any of the places mentioned above.

More information about the descendants of Robert FLOWER and Ann nee GRAY can be found on Janet Straw's GREAVES website.
