Marion Husband and Fiona Shaw
Thursday, June 7th at 7pm
Marion Husband - reading from 'All the Beauty of the Sun'
and Fiona Shaw - reading from 'A Stone's Throw'
All the Beauty of the Sun ('Boy I Love' Trilogy part 2)
by Marion Husband, author of ‘the Boy I Love’ and ‘Paper Moon’
Love and loyalty are put to the test in the aftermath of the First World War
Soho 1925. Two young men meet - for one of them this is love at first sight, for the other only lust and guilt
Paul Harris returns to England from self-imposed exile in Tangiers for an exhibition of his paintings. He leaves behind Patrick, the man he has loved since they met in the trenches in 1918, needing to discover if he has the strength to live without him and wanting to explore the kind of life he might have lived had it not been for the war. In Bohemian Soho, Paul meets Edmund, whose passionate love changes Paul’s idea of himself. With Edmund, Paul begins to believe that he may have another life to live, free of the guilt and regrets of the past. But the past is not so easy to escape, and when Patrick follows Paul to London a decision must be made that will affect all their lives.
'As with all the best novelists, Husband's talent seems to draw its energy from the experience of writing from perspectives far removed from her own as she inhabits other genders, other sexualities, other eras. Her ventriloquism is compelling’ Patrick Gale
‘Marion Husband explores the morality of wartime Britain with intelligent and compassionate insight.’ Mslexia
A Stone's Throw by Fiona Shaw, author ‘Tell it to the Bees’
'Fiona Shaw writes with a pure style and an honest heart' --Emma Donoghue
'Set in England and Africa, and opening during World War Two, A Stone's Throw is a novel about family, about love, about duty; it's about the people we miss and the secrets we keep. Above all though, it's about the choices we make - and those we don't. As subtle and delicate as gossamer... a masterclass in restraint' Financial Times
A man and his young son set out on a journey one snow struck day. Another man skims stones across the sea with his daughter. Three generations separate them, but one loss connects them - sixty years apart, but no more than a stone's throw.
In between these two men is Meg. Like everyone, she's made choices in her life, and mostly she's proud of them. But that doesn't mean she isn't haunted by what might have been ...
Set in England and Africa, opening during World War Two, A Stone's Throw is about how secrets linger and the price we pay to keep them. Most of all, it's about the choices we make, about consequences - and how we must, finally, let go of the past and face the future.

- Photographs by Blake Little
Book Launch Social
Thursday June 14th, 7pm
Photographed over the last seven years, Little’s portraits of these men are unadorned and focus on the individual strength and character of each sitter. Taken as a group, they represent his idea, a surprising new vision of male beauty that is quietly subversive and powerful. Most importantly, Little’s images shatter mainstream stereotypes of homosexuality and underscores that masculinity lies beyond sexuality.
Going to be a fun relaxed book launch social and a rare opportunity to meet Blake, who is based in the U.S.
FREE - All Welcome - RSVP on Facebook (or just turn up). Refreshments available.
With these photographs, Blake Little has illuminated a new and seemingly inconspicuous subculture that extends through rural communities, small towns and cities across the country. While each subject appears solitary in their photo, together these men comprise a vast brotherhood that connects them. And while the work captures a social movement that is specific to this time and place, as seen through Little’s camera, the results are timeless.
The Company of Men is Blake Little’s second book and contains 89 full-color plates, with a forward by punk icon and spoken word artist Henry Rollins.
'To get the images he did, Blake had to strike up a conversation through his lens with the men on the other side of his camera. It is the power of that immediacy, understanding and trust which makes the images so striking. Blake was after something, the truth of his pursuit is not lost on the faces of the men in this book, it is in fact the thing that gives them such collective power.' - Henry Rollins.
