'A Perfectly Good Man'
A few words from Patrick Gale:
"It should come as no surprise to regular readers of my work to learn that gay men and women lie at the heart of this new novel's moral pattern. The novel tells the story of a (compellingly attractive) straight man who works as a priest in a remote Cornish parish but it gradually transpires that the great influence that has shaped him is his gay uncle, whose long relationship with another man is presented in pointed contrast to several more or less toxic straight marriages in the story. Oh yes, and in time honoured English fashion the novel ends with a church wedding - for a pair of brides"
More book details:
The new novel from Patrick Gale, author of Richard & Judy-bestseller ‘Notes from an Exhibition’, returning readers to his beloved Cornish coastline.
"Do you need me to pray for you now for a specific reason?"
"I’m going to die."
"We’re all going to die. Does dying frighten you?"
"I mean I’m going to kill myself."
When 20-year-old Lenny Barnes, paralysed in a rugby accident, commits suicide in the presence of Barnaby Johnson, the much-loved priest of a West Cornwall parish, the tragedy's reverberations open up the fault-lines between Barnaby and his nearest and dearest. The personal stories of his wife, children and lover illuminate Barnaby's ostensibly happy life, and the gulfs of unspoken sadness that separate them all. Across this web of relations scuttles Barnaby's repellent nemesis - a man as wicked as his prey is virtuous.
Returning us to the rugged Cornish landscape of Notes from an Exhibition, Patrick Gale lays bare the lives and the thoughts of a whole community and asks us: what does it mean to be good? To be published March 15th.
Praise for 'Notes from an Exhibition':
'I was completely enthralled by "Notes from an Exhibition." Patrick's Gale's prose grows ever more acrobatic and heartstopping, though somehow he never seems to be showing off. And few writers have grasped the twisted dynamics of family the way Gale has. There's really no one he can't inhabit, understand and forgive.' - Armistead Maupin

Shaun Levin is a South African writer based in London. He lived for many years in Israel. Much of his work is concerned with issue of immigration, home, identity and sexuality. He has been publishing stories since the early 1990s, and published his first book, Seven Sweet Things, in 2003. Since then, he has published several books and many stories, and most recently has been writing about the lives of three British painters, Mark Gertler, David Bomberg and Isaac Rosenberg.
Anthony McDonald studied history at Durham University. His first novel, Orange Bitter, Orange Sweet, was published by Gay Men’s Press in 2001 and his second, Adam, in 2003. It became one of the best selling books GMP ever published and was followed by Blue Sky Adam 2009 and Getting Orlando 2011. More on Getting Orlando: When Oliver loses his job and his lover in the space of a few months, he wonders if he will ever know happiness again. Unexpectedly, his life is transformed when he encounters an extraordinarily beautiful red-head on a train just minutes before a stranger in a pub offers him money to courier a mysterious package out of the country. Opportunities for cash, travel and adventure are suddenly within his grasp, as well as, amazingly, the young man to share them with. But when dreams come true, the aftermath is seldom predictable, and Oliver finds himself drawn into the outer orbits of a shadowy world of art theft and drug smuggling, and into a relationship whose roller-coaster progress will test him to his limits. Getting Orlando is a story of adventure, travel and romantic obsession.
Eric Karl Anderson's novel, Enough, was published in June 2004 (now OP. His work has appeared in Blithe House Quarterly (BHQ6.3), Riverbabble, Harrington Gay Men's Fiction Quarterly and Tatlin's Tower. He lives in London.
