When you joined
ANY of the above mailing lists you would have received an automated welcome letter,
sent from the Rootsweb robot. You are
strongly recommended to keep this in a safe place, as it provides you with the
details of how to unsubscribe and posting to whichever list you have
joined. Sending an email to our personal
email addresses WILL NOT subscribe or unsubscribe you. If you encounter
difficulties please email the admin address, which will be found on your
Rootsweb welcome (another good reason to keep this message!!)
Over the coming
weeks, we are in the process of loading list pages to the web site, as you can
see some are complete, and some are still in progress. We are happy to receive
material for the web pages, this includes useful books, web sites etc.
List Etiquette.
Remember to be polite to
other list members and treat others as you wish to be treated.
If, someone posts something
you don't like, take it up directly with that person privately or write to the
List Admin Address, Please Do NOT write to the List.
Please Do NOT post details of
ANY Commercial enterprises without the consent of List Admin.
Please Do NOT post details of NEW Mailing
lists without first having had the courtesy to ask the List Administrators
permission to do so.
Please Do NOT post details
of ANY Computer Viruses. If you are concerned please contact the List Admin.
Rootsweb prevents viruses, trojans, worms, etc. from
getting to lists by blocking dangerous attachments which include html posts and
binary files.
Please Do NOT post details
of List Admin notices seen on other Mailing Lists. These messages are posted by
the List Administrator and not by anyone else.
When responding to a
message, leave just enough of that message so that other Lister’s know to just
what you are responding to. Many people have to pay for downloading their mail
and do not need lengthy copies of an original message with every reply.
Please Do NOT post details
of updates done to your own web pages without first consulting the List
Administrator.
These are friendly and
informative lists, and are provided by Rootsweb and administered by us for the
benefit of Genealogists everywhere, including those new to Genealogy and/or the
Internet. Remember, we were all new once!
Finally, please remember
that these rules are laid down to help ensure the smooth running of the List,
anybody who regularly decides to ignore them could find themselves either
moderated or put onto the reject list.
Posting
to the Lists
The
correct address to post to, NEVER, has the word request in it!
To
post to a list, send an email WITH a useful subject heading, to an address,
which has L@rootsweb.com in it.
Over
the last few months we have been swamped with postings to the list, which have
bounced to us, all because they have been sent to the request address. We have,
up to now forwarded these messages to the relevant lists, BUT, we now find that
those who are replying to these forwarded messages click reply and send the
replied to US instead of the CORRECT person. We Can NO LONGER GUARANTEE that we
will forward your message to the lists.
This is simply because we get too many of them! Also, if we are away
from our computers for a day or so, YOUR message is sitting in the admin
address mailbox and NOT seen by list members.
Useful
Subject Headings
Some
subscribers receive postings to the list in DIGEST format therefore it is worth
considering a clear, concise and short subject heading.
Please
remember to post with a subject line that is still relevant and tells the
reader which surname and area you are researching, whether you are posting
a new query/information or whether you are responding to someone else's
message.
Bounced
mail
Please
make sure that you empty your mailbox often, especially if you are on a busy
list in mail mode. The Robot is set to AUTOMATICALLY UNSUBSCRIBE you after 4
bounces. If you find that you do not
receive mail from a list you are subscribed to for a day or so, RESUBSCRIBE in
the usual way.
Shouting
at the List Admin!
Yes,
many people do it! There is no point in
writing to the list admin and shouting (In Capitals) “remove me now”. It won’t happen, you will be responded to by
us using the delete key. There is also
no point shouting at the Rootsweb Robot, it can’t hear you!!!
If
you have a problem, write to the admin address, which should look like this: INSERTLISTNAMEHERE-admin@rootsweb.com
also please remember time differences throughout the world. If you are awake
and needing list admin help, we may be asleep!
Please give us time to wake up! (we are both in the UK). We try to reply
to list mail on a daily basis.
Email Bullying !
I know, it seems ridiculous doesn't it, but it does happen, and neither Carol
or I will tolerate such activity to either
Ourselves, or our list members.
What is email bullying? It is any email sent to the list, or to a private
address whereby the content of the email is one or more
of the
following: threatening, rude, emails intending the recipient to feel
intimidated and worthless.
Now, of course people new to email might send emails that are not composed with
email netiquette. We all make mistakes,
and we
are only human, we can all compose emails and click send and then think,
seconds later, I shouldn't have done that.
Well, we possibly have all done
that or similar. That is a something quite different to email bullying.
There is a fine line between the
two and
the offenders of email bullying know who they are, and in our experience of
list admin they are
certainly the first to complain when moderated.
Offenders of such activity will be removed from the list and Rootsweb will be
informed. Rootsweb lists exist for us all to
share, our knowledge with each other and to seek
genealogical links - they do not exist to become unfriendly places because 2%
of
the list members wish to spoilt the list and its friendly, virtual atmosphere
for the remainder of the list members.
If you feel that you have received a bullying email please forward a copy
of the email along with the headers to the
list admin address that pertains to the relevant list.
If
you can think of anything we should have mentioned, please tell us!!
