Short Biography

With nearly 500 published pieces to his name, Ernest Tomlinson is unquestionably one of the finest British composers of the day. His music has been played by all the country's main orchestras, with regular broadcasts on the BBC and around the world. In addition he has written extensively for choirs, brass bands and windband. Conducting his first radio programme in 1955 he continues to enjoy performing and recording.

His particular skill is writing modern and innovative music with memorable melodies. Original orchestration combines with careful shaping to give a unique feel to his scores. Lighter pieces such as "Little Serenade" and "Canzonet" radiate the joy of composing. Whilst the influence of the English folk tradition may be apparent in some of his early work, his complete entry into world music was heralded by his successful combination of big-band and orchestra in the rhythmic "Sinfonia '62". This success was followed by "Symphony '65" and "Concerto for 5 Saxophones" which were performed at light music festivals in London and Munich. Other major commissions include "Rhapsody and Rondo for Horn", "Concerto for Orchestra" and "Little Symphony".

Ernest Tomlinson's background in choral music has led him to work with many choirs. "Festival of Song" is written to entertain audiences and singers alike. As with all his many arrangements and original songs he never fails to show off the strengths of modern choral singing and extract the best from any vocal combination. There are some real gems amongst his pieces for brass band and windband. "Best Foot Forward" is a modern march with a tune that swings and "Aero-fantasy" includes some of the most original scoring you'll ever come across.

During a recent BBC programme Brian Kay said, "Ernest Tomlinson is one of the greatest voices in the world of light music". Throughout the world listeners and performers alike agree!
