Music for String Orchestra by Ernest Tomlinson
The following pieces, specifically for string orchestras, are also listed in the main catalogue. The comments are by the composer himself. When he writes "very fast", he intends the orchestra to throw caution to the winds and note/pitch accuracy is allowed to take second place to the overall ensemble effect. (Try it! It's great to hear strings playing really loud and fast and not hidden behind overly enthusiastic brass.)
Serenade for Strings (17 mins)
1. Cantabile
2. Tranquillo
3. Grazioso
4. Giocoso
Needs symphonic strength. Movement 3 was taken out and had several broadcasts as Graceful Dance. The last movement also works on its own particularly when played very fast.
Four Movements for String Orchestra
1. Alla Marcia
2. Soft Stillness and the Night
3. Melanie Dances
4. Concert Waltz
`Suite' put together for four concerts by the excellent Northern Chamber Orchestra recently, which included "Light Music by Northern Composers". Movement 1 had many more broadcasts for strings than in its full orchestra version (see ET's first Marco Polo CD). Movement 2 was arranged from its FO version especially for those concerts. 3 and 4 were originally recorded for Chandos in 1966 or so, revived by these concerts. The finale needs some playing.
Catch Me If You Can
Last movement 2nd Suite of English Folk Dances (See 1st Marco Polo CD) arranged for strings. An easier (slightly!) alternative finale to the above.
Miniature Suite for Strings
1. Canzonet
2. Saraband
3. Minuet
4. Country Dance
Written specifically for learner groups - 2nd Violin relatively easy - Viola can be ommitted - Violin 1 generally no higher than 1st position - plenty of tuttis - lots of fun scoring.
Other single items rediscovered so far:-
Passepied (arranged from original orchestration, as recorded in ET's 2nd Marco Polo CD)
Interlude from 'Head of the Family'
A nice little piece which had a lot of broadcasts in its Small Orchestra form.
