Born near Reigate, Surrey. Educated at Cambridge but owing to ill-health did not complete his degree. 1907 went to Jamaica to convalesce and returned to England 1909, having lost the sight of one eye after a haemorrhage. In 1912 he entered the Slade School of Fine Art, London. He met Sickert and Gilman during World War I and began to exhibit at New English Art Club and with the London Group from 1919. Throughout the 1920's he travelled widely and exhibited regularly in London. A friend of Vanessa Bell, Duncan Grant and most of the Bloomsbury Group, he held a major retrospective at the Minories, Colchester, 1969. |
