Looks the part but no second gear or radio!!

But very cheap

.

Staying in the Town of Lagos, about a 2 hr. taxi transfer from Faro airport and near to loads of smashing beaches. Our accommodation was in a studio apartment at the Porta Da Villa Apartments in the old town and about 5 mins. walk from the main town square. ( there is a hill to climb on the way back so use taxi ). There are lots of places to eat in town ranging from traditional Portuguese dishes such as swordfish steaks, Lobster etc. to Indian and Chinese. Lots of choice and good prices too. You must try Piri-Piri chicken ( Yummy)

If you are a golfer you are in heaven in the Algarve. There are loads of very good courses in the area and club hire is usually available.A round at the Altogolf course in Prai de Vau costs €90 but is half price if you look around the net for special offers.

A half set will cost about €26 to hire.

Car hire is recommended if you wish to see the real Algarve. Away from the coast is another world where time has stood still for Centuries. Rates vary but don't be tempted by the "cheapies" the cars are old and unreliable. Also beware there is usually an insurance excess of 400 to 800 Euros attached to the insurance. You can opt out of this by paying a Waiver of approx. 13 Euros a day ( non refundable) OK for a few days but can be expensive if you have a car for an extended period. DO opt for air conditioning its worth it!!

Maps of the area can be a little misleading with roads shown where there are none and other items that don't appear to exist. Beware of the new motorway it can take you MILES out of your way. Use the EN125 (its a bit quieter now...)

We found the locals very friendly and helpful and as I said before I think a return visit is on the cards.

The last couple of times we have visited the Algarve we have been at an apartment complex in Prai do vau called ESTRELLA DO VAO. this has been a very good place to stay with spacious apartments and very good communal area and pools. There is also ample car parking on site.

This year (2003) I didn't take my own advice and hired a "cheapie" on the internet. Bad thing to do. The car had no second gear and the radio had been nicked.... It was cheap though.( € 210 for whole week with nothing more to pay )

Been back for another go 2005 and enjoyed it immensely

Especially Beths Bar In Lagos great music, fantastic atmosphere and home made food to Die For

We are booked up for the Algarve again this year ( 2006 ) In July this time though to make SURE of a decent suntan.... There will still be plenty of time for beer though........
