Farmers' Market's

August 18th 2008

"Energy Saving Scotland" have been allocated a stall at our Clarkston Market on Saturday, 23rd August, 2008. They will provide advice on energy saving light bulbs and other devices and may have free hand outs. This is an issue that affects us all.

August 4th 2008

Our last "Bugle" call announced a new producer - The Cullen Skink Soup Company. Sadly this venture did not get off the ground and they have now informed us that they have withdrawn from the Farmers' Market scene.

July, 28th 2008

Our new producer, The Cullen Skink Soup Company, had a bad start to a farmers' market career. Sadly on the way to Clarkston her van decided to take a "sicky" and Dr "AA" was unable to provide immediate resuscitation! We understand that a lot of very good soup was wasted.

We understand that Tina will be coming to Overton this Saturday and we wish her a safe journey.

Grumpytam! still has to finalise the vetting procedure with this producer but it is interesting to note that she was a FINALIST in the SCOTTISH FINAL of ITV's BRITAIN's BEST DISH. This will be shown on STV during August.

June, 16th 2008

Sunnyside Farm who participate at our markets at Overton Farm & Clarkston are to be featured on The "F" Word programme tomorrow night - Channel 4, 9pm. Janet Street-Porter visits Sunnyside Farm and then invites Dominic to her home for more filming. Why does he get all the luck?

LFML have been advised by officials of EAST RENFREWSHIRE COUNCIL that we will no longer be permitted to put out our banners, used to advertise our market in Hamilton. This is inspite of the Council providing us with banners, in 2003, for the very purpose of advertising the market. It is now deemed to be a Health & Safety issue as the banners are now considered to be a distraction to vehicle drivers passing through Clarkston. We have been told that we can display the banners within car parks or hang them from buildings owned by co-operative owners. Are there any such people out there or if you feel strongly about this please take it up with your local councillor.

April, 28th 2008

In addition to the announcement, last week, of 2 new producers coming to our markets we are pleased to advise our customers that DUNIPACE MILL NURSERY, from Larbert, will be attending our markets over the summer. We hope you will give them your support.

April, 14th 2008

TWO new producers are to trial LFML venues.

a. CRYMBLE's CONFECTIONERY from East Kilbride. You are in for a treat with this stall-holders produce. Using only top quality ingredients KATHLEEN CRYMBLE produces a selection of superb confectionery. These are out of the top drawer.

b. THOMSON's SAUSAGES from Troon. JANIE THOMSON and her husband (a recently retired butcher) are producing their own lorne sausage and burgers.

Both these producers are dedicated to the the quality of the items they produce. New to the farmers' market scene they will looking for your support. LFML wishes them well and hopes that they will be very successful.

They will be attending all of our markets, including STONEHOUSE, on the 10th May, 2008

April, 6th 2008

The STONEHOUSE MARKET has now hit the "radar" screens. LFML returns to Stonehouse in 5 weeks. This year the market will be larger with, perhaps, some 20 stalls. We hope to have :- beef (organic & traditional)
pork (organic & traditional)
organic poultry
ostrich
wild boar
cheeses (3 producers)
jams/preserves
honey (Lanarkshire)
chutneys galore
confectionery
fresh & smoked seafoods
home baking
breads
locally brewed ales
nursery/bedding plants
asian delicasies
hand crafted soaps

In addition to all this we hope to have local shopkeepers and crafters involved. More information later.

THE WEATHER WILL BE BETTER THIS YEAR as LFML have paid their weather dues!

Just watch this space

April, 2nd 2008

We have been advised by South Lanarkshire Council that they fully anticipate that the A72 will be re-opened by Friday, 4th April. So.... THE MARKET IS ON. If by any chance the road should remain closed, access to Overton Farm can be acheived from NETHERBURN. Follow the temporary road signs.

March, 24th 2008

A. Overton Farm Market, 5th APRIL. The A72 adjacent to Overton Farm will be closed for resurfacing and other works for 2 weeks from Tuesday, 25th March. It is anticipated that this work will be nearing completion by Friday, 4th May - the day before the market. We are confident that access to Overton Farm will be available from Garrion Bridge/Rosebank with limited access from Crossford. At this time the market is ON and this website will be updated nearer the time.

B. Overton Farm Market, 5th May. The Market will be reduced in size for this date - a small glitch which sees both Millhouse Home Bakes and Duane Paterson (fresh fish) unavailable to attend. Next month they return with the addition of 2 new stalls - watch this space for more news on this front.

B. STONEHOUSE MARKET, 10th May 2008. Once again LFML will hold a market in Stonehouse (opposite the Co-op). A temporary licence has been applied for and we have 14 stalls interested in partaking. It cannot be as wet as last year!

November, 20th 2007

Congratulations to FENCEBAY FISHERIES who, this year, have taken part in UKTV Local Food Heroes 2007 programme. Well done Bernard Thain & his wife Jill who have battled their way through the heats to take FIRST place in the SCOTTISH REGIONAL EVENT. This was a great achievement and LFML are extremely proud that Fencebay are members of our Co-operative and that they support our markets in Hamilton & Clarkston. By the way, they are coming to CARLUKE on the 8th December.

Yes, our extra market in Carluke on Saturday 8th December '07 looks to be an extremely promising. There will be at least 18 food stalls + 5/6 craft (local) stalls. There will be 2 local charity stalls and on top of that we will have DUNEDIN DELIGHTS who will be selling hot and freshly cooked seafoods. No - not your fish & chips but scallops, langostine, scrambled egg & prawns, all washed down with a cup of Cullen Skink. What more do you want? One of GRUMPYTAM's Ostrich Burgers. So.... come on down!

September, 18th 2007

Another winner!
Sunnyside Farm of Sanquhar, specialising in Gloucester Old Spot Pigs have won a GREAT TASTE AWARD for their Dry Cured Back Bacon. A great achievement ! Read on........

Sunnyside Farm, Sanquhar  wins Great Taste Award

SUNNYSIDE FARM situated in Sanquhar is celebrating after winning a prestigious Great Taste Award.

The company has been presented with a much-desired Gold Great Taste Award for its Gloucester Old Spot dry cured back bacon.

Regarded as the industry Oscars, The Guild of Fine Food’s annual Great Taste Awards are the UK’s largest independent evaluation of fine food and drink.

Each year, almost 4,500 foods are blind-tasted by up to three separate teams of experts before the awards are made. Since May there have been nearly two weeks of tasting by over 400 independent judges. As a result, 530 Great Taste Awards have been given out for excellence in taste, texture and flavour.

Bob Farrand of the Guild of Fine Food, said: “These awards have been running for 14 years now and are a recognised mark of excellence that consumers can trust and rely on.

“The winning products have been through a thorough judging process and we are able to assure consumers that the Great Taste logo, which all award winners can use, signifies genuine, proven fine food.  It’s not just a supermarket premium marketing slogan that bears almost no relation to the quality of the food in the packet.

“The Great Taste Awards reflect what is happening in the fine food halls, delicatessens and farm shops throughout the UK and during judging we tasted some fantastic gourmet delicacies from all over the world.”

Doreen, David and Dominic Smith breed pork, lamb, beef and Rose Veal at their Sanquhar based farm. They practice the highest welfare standards of outdoor reared pork specifically from Gloucester Old Spot pigs. The purebred Shetland sheep and pedigree Aberdeen Angus cattle are fed nothing but grass to ensure great tasting lamb and beef. They are also Scotland’s only producers of outdoor reared Rose veal.
All products are processed in the farm’s own butchery, without any artificial colours or preservatives
The award winning bacon is produced by hand without the use of water or chemicals.
“We are over the moon to get some recognition for the hard work and devotion to our stock and our produce from the Great Taste Awards. I now hope we can convince the local population of Dumfriesshire to try something different and support local artisan producers.” Dominic Smith

Sales of GREEN SHOPPING BAGS going well. See GRUMPYTAM & some other stallholders.

We are back in CUMBERNAULD on FRIDAY for our second trial. There will be an increased number of stalls - a total of 17 including the confectionary trailer. There will be a wide range of very good produce on sale and "the proof of the pudding will be in the eating of it". Grumpytam will be offering cooked burgers/sausages and steak in a roll and many stalls will be offering samples of their produce for you to taste before you buy. So come on down and have another great day.

July, 25th 2007

GREEN SHOPPING BAGS: Our new Market shopping bags are now available at all of our markets. Buy one from your favourite stall-holder. These bags are good in quality and style. They are manufactured from non-woven spun bonded polypropylene - a fabric based product. The bags are bio-degradable and they are made from second use plastics - in other words they have been recycled once before. The bags are attractive, hold a lot and pack well.

The first market in CARLUKE was an outstanding success. The Carluke residents voted with their feet and "came on down" to the town centre. The weather forecast was NOT good but in the event it remained dry until the last 30 minutes or so. Our second trial of this venue will take place on Saturday, 29th September at the same time.

June, 24th 2007

Two bits of news

1. We are very pleased to acknowledge that THORNTONHALL FARMHOUSE ICE CREAM have collected 4 Bronze awards at this year's Highland show. They are up there with THE BEST.

2. We arrive in Carluke on Saturday (30th June) for the first of our two trial markets there. We have not got a licence yet but we are sure it will be issued. We will have 15 stalls, all being well, and they will offer a wide variety of food produce not normally found in the local shops. Quality is the essence. The CLYDESDALE ARTHRITIS SUPPORT GROUP will have a charity stall and the ladies running this stall will be managing our EGG COMPETITION. What's that, you ask? Well, COME ON DOWN and find out. You COULD win the big prize of £50 of market vouchers or you might be a LUCKY NUMBER winner as well. What do you have to do? Simply guess the weight of the OSTRICH EGG! Easy!

June, 18th 2007

The proposed Carluke Market is now less than 2 weeks away. It should be a good day for the town. There should be a very good turn-out of stall-holders. Get down early and enter the "EGG" competition. YOU could be a winner. One lucky customer will receive £50 of market vouchers. All you have to do is guess the weight of an OSTRICH egg filled with SMARTIES.

There will be one CHARITY STALL at Carluke. This is The Clydesdale Arthritis Support Group. They will be running the EGG competition. Give them your support, please.

Talking about CHARITY, we are pleased to announce that LFML have collected £155 for YORKHILL CHILDREN's HOSPITAL. Thank you very much for your contributions.

Egg Competition winners were MRS PRIEST (£50) and MRS McCALLUM (£20). They will receive their vouchers in the next fewdays and we hope to see them back at the next Cumbernauld Market on FRIDAY, 10th AUGUST .

Coming soon will be the CARLUKE MARKET on Saturday, 30th June. This should be good too IF we get our temporary licence. We hope to have 17 or 18 stalls. Come to the town on the 30th June and do all your shoping there. Visit the permanent shops - they have much to offer and need your support.

June, 4th 2007
