Season 2003/2004
May 2004
Bangor will play
in the Northern Combination league next season after finishing the season
with only three points. The season was always going to be difficult as
eight experienced players left before pre-season, and this crisis was
compounded by the departure of four players to Liverpool after the start
of the season. At one stage there were serious doubts that Bangor would
be able to finish the season. However, with a minimum playing staff the
stalwarts dug in for the club and saw the season through.
There are probably
too many ow points to mention when you don't win a league game but the
trip down to Charlton after the departure of Giggsy and Nicki to Liverpool
had been confirmed was a particular low. It is difficult to pick out many
positives from such a miserable season but the commitment and effort put
into lost causes and the spirit on and off the pitch undoubtedly were
remarkable. Youngsters were given a chance and they didn't disappoint
and hopefully they can take the club forward after a period of consolidation.
However, City will be hoping new playing resources come their way before
the start of the season in what is the most testing league outside the
National divisions.
Captain Gill Smith
has announced her retirement from football after 10 seasons with the club.
Elain Owen, Alwen Williams and Katie Williams will all decide their futures
in the next few weeks.
April 2004
Relegated Bangor have
also crashed out of the Welsh Cup after a 4-0 semi-final defeat to Cardiff.
A depleted Bangor squad will finish the season on Bank Holiday Monday
against relegated Chesterfield having first played Wolves at Caernarfon
on the Sunday!
February 2004
Relegation looming?
With just eight games
left Bangor find themselves fifteen points off safety. Having picked up
only their second point of the season against Wolves on Sunday, and with
Chesterfield and Lincoln both recording wins it looks like Bangor will
suffer relegation for the first time in the club's sixteen year history.
The Welsh Cup quarter-final against Corwen Sunday 15th will provide a
distraction from the relegation battle, kick-off 2pm at the Memorial Ground,
Corwen.
Jiws makes rugby
debut!
Former Bangor and
Wales winger Manon Lloyd Williams (25) will make her rugby debut for Wales
against Scotland this Saturday (14th Feb) at Cardiff Arms Park. 'Jiws'
had been a regular in the Bangor team until she suffered a broken leg
in November 2001 after a heavy challenge. Although she managed to play
in last seasons UEFA cup campaign her confidence never fully returned
and she turned her attentions to rugby. Having played for Caernarfon Ladies
she was quickly spotted by Wales and has been selected to play on the
wing! Her first Welsh rugby cap can now be added to the eight she gained
playing football. Her ex- team mates wish her well!
January 2004
Happy New Year to
all our supporters!
December 2003
Welsh Cup, Tania
Jones..
Bangor will play Corwen
in the quarter-finals of the Welsh Cup on February 15th at Corwen. Tania
Jones has been banned for three games following her sending off against
Middlesbrough in the league game that finished 1-1. Jones will miss the
league game at Sheffield Wednesday as well as the Welsh Cup and FA Cup ties.
October 2003
Cunningham returns
and Prince signs...
Irish forward Susie
Cunningham has re-signed for Bangor and is expected to make her debut
against Oldham. Susie played for City for several years whilst studying
at Bangor University until she graduated at the end of last season but
work now brings her back to Bangor. City would also like to welcome Bangor
student Mel Prince to the team. Mel is from Wrexham and was at Liverpool
Ladies last season but I'm sure nobody will hold that against her! Samantha
Jones and Catrin Thomas also step up to the first team squad from the
Academy.
Elain Owen has seen
a specialist after injuring her knee ligaments against Charlton and is
expected to be out of action for up to a month.
Bad season gets
worse...
The rush to leave
Bangor City for title favourites Liverpool continues apace with 23 year
old Welsh International Ceryl Jones the latest to announce her departure.
'Giggsy' joined Bangor aged 14 but left the club for a couple of seasons
to join Everton FC only to return to Bangor. Jones becomes the fourth
player to leave Bangor for Liverpool since the start of the season.
Bangor play Charlton
Athletic in the League Cup this weekend in a game that will provide invaluable
experience for the team. Team news to follow.
September 2003
Tough cup draw
for Bangor
Bangor's
reward for beating Barnet in the League cup is another costly trip down
south to take on Charlton. The tie will be played on Sunday 12th October
and Bangor will have their work cut out against the National Division league
leaders.
Keeper Davies
to join Liverpool
Welsh
International Nicola Davies has announced she will leave Bangor at the end
of the month to join Liverpool Ladies. Davies has been Bangor's regular
keeper since joining the club in 2000. Nicky will play for Bangor against
Liverpool on Wednesday 17th before leaving to join up with the Welsh U19
squad.
Bangor blast referee...
An already
stretched Bangor squad will be without Alwen Williams for one game following
her harsh sending off against Stockport last Sunday (24th August). The referee
claimed Williams had handled on the line and we have to assume he meant
the line of the six yard box. Annoyed Bangor supporter Rob Richardson said
'I couldn't believe he sent Biff off as she instinctively covered her face
and turned away from the ball so it definitely wasn't intentional and I
wasn't sure she even handled the ball. The shot was going wide anyway! Awarding
a penalty was bad enough but to produce a red card was a joke'. Bangor defender
Gill Smith suffered a recurrence of her ankle injury and will be racing
against time to be fit for Bangor's next game against Sheffield Wednesday.
Striker Ailsa Orlik should be available for selection having missed the
Stockport game through family commitments.

Kelly quits City!
Welsh
U19 star Kelly Davies has handed in a shock transfer request to manager
Keith Fearns. Kelly has been at the club for over three years and had continued
playing for City despite joining the Arsenal Academy last season. The midfielder
struggled to displace established players in the City midfield but was a
key player in last seasons campaign. Kelly said 'I've found it increasingly
hard to travel on the train up to North Wales every weekend and then not
starting games. With exams coming up I felt it would be easier to play for
a club nearer the Academy.' Bangor captain Gill Smith was sorry to see the
player leave 'Kelly was the fittest and most dedicated player at the club
and she will be greatly missed by the team'. Good luck to Kelly and hopefully
she will return to Bangor in the future.

Tough
trip for Bangor in Europe
Bangor face a difficult journey
to Wroclaw in south-west Poland for the group stage of the UEFA Women's
Cup. Bangor were placed in Group 4 in today's draw (15th July) in Switzerland
along with KS
AZS Wroclaw (host team - Poland), FC Sursee (Switzerland), HJK Helsinki
(Finland). Bangor
now have to face top seeds Helsinki who reached last season's semi-finals,
Wroclaw who lost in group stage to Arsenal and Swiss champions Sursee.
Matches to be played between 25th and 29th September 2002.
Manager Keith Fearns is now planning the
costly European adventure 'It looks like we will have to get there by
flying to Prague and travelling by coach to Wroclaw. We will have to see
how many of the squad can get the time off and afford the trip but it
is still an exciting prospect'.
8th July - UEFA Women's Cup
Bangor will find out who they are to play
in the UEFA Women's Cup when the draw is made in Switzerland on July 15th.
At the moment 32 teams are entered which will mean that preliminary rounds
are avoided and Bangor would go straight into the main group competition
(25th Sept to 29th Sept). This would comprise 8 groups of 4 teams each.
If
additional teams are entered then a preliminary round may have to be played
which would take place between the 12th & 18th August and 31st &
3rd September (home and away leg).
6th
July - Fixtures Announced
Bangor
will face Aston Villa away on the opening day of the season. The clash
will take place on 18th August subject to UEFA cup commitment and is a
repeat of last seasons epic opener in which the teams finished 5-5! Bangor
are also scheduled to play two Wednesday night games against Liverpool.
A full fixture list can be found in 'Matches'.
