Season ends in tired
defeat...
Chesterfield 3 Bangor
City 1, Bank Holiday Monday 3rd May 2004
On a hot day and just
24 hours after a battling draw against Wolves it was no surprise City
wilted and ended the season without a league win. Bangor were on top for
much of the first half and Broadbent scored from a free-kick after ten
minutes, however the cynical tackle by the keeper to prevent Cunningham
scoring that led to the free-kick went unpunished. With Chesterfield devoid
of ideas they got back into the game after a poor decision by the linesman.
Clearly physically incapable of keeping up with play Chesterfield were
allowed to score despite another blatant offside that wasn't given. The
goal gave them hope and they scored just before the break to take a lucky
lead into half-time.
Bangor were too tired
to mount much a challenge and Chesterfield had much of the play. A mistake
at the end allowed them to score their third but from the match it was
clear why both teams had gone been relegated.

Goal. Broadbent
City fate nearly
sealed...
Bangor City 0 Chesterfield
1, Sunday 7th March 2004 at the Oval
Bangor were without
keeper Hewitt and youngster Sara Lacey made her full debut in goal for
this bottom of the table clash. The uneven playing surface didn't suit
Bangor but they were the better team in the first half. Katie Williams
almost gave Bangor a deserved lead after a flowing move but the Chesterfield
keeper pulled off a fine save to deflect the ball away for a corner. Orlik
also created problems but couldn't quite find the finishing touch. Chesterfield's
main threat was from long kicks by the keeper although the home defence
wasn't unduly troubled.
Bangor looked to find
the decisive goal and were clearly on top but it was Chesterfield who
scored the opening goal and changed the whole pattern of the game. A harmless
looking cross was spilled by Lacey and Skull tapped in for the visitors
from close range. The visitors grew in confidence whilst Bangor's confidence
ebbed away and Bangor didn't really threaten an equaliser.
