Relgated!

Bangor City 2 Sunderland 7, Sunday 4th April 2004

After five years in the top flight Bangor's long-expected relegation from the Nationwide Women’s Premier League Northern Division was finally confirmed after this 7-2 home defeat to Sunderland. Reay hit a hat-trick and Bell scored twice for the Black Cats to do the main damage to Bangor’s last hopes of securing the first of six wins needed to avoid the drop. At one stage things hadn't looked so bleak for City as the score stood at 4-2 with two goals from corners from defender turned striker Katie Williams. Gill Smith had an excellent chance to make it 4-3 when she followed up a Prince shot but stretching could only head into the keepers arms. After that it was one way traffic as a under strength Sunderland side routed City.

City struggle again

Sunderland 4 Bangor City 0, Sunday 5th October 2003

Sunderland’s 4-0 win against Bangor City lifted them out of the relegation zone but left pointless Bangor rooted firmly to the bottom. The home side took just 17 seconds to take the lead through Steph Houghton. Poor defending made it too easy for Sunderland to score with a move from the kick-off. By the 12th minute Sunderland had victory in their grasp after Claire Bridgett and Mel Reay had added their second and third goals. Reay scoring from a free-kick and Birdgett finishing well after poor defending from a corner. Bangor managed to lift their heads to play some football but never threatened the Sunderland goal.

The second half saw less goals but Sunderland were in control throughout the half. Some wasteful finishing and good goalkeeping kept the score down. The home team did add to their tally when the off-side trap failed and Houghton went clear to score.

Bangor 4-4-2/ 3-5-2 Natalie Hewitt (Elen), Sam Bell, Alwen Williams, Gill Smith, Tania Jones, Ceryl Jones, Siwan Elenid, Kim Broadbent, Kirsty Roberts (Sophie Craig), Danni Keegan (Elain Owen), Ailsa Orlik.
