Cup success for City
Wimbledon 1 Bangor City 2
- Axa FA League Cup Sunday 23rd September 2001
Bangor travelled to
Kingsmeadow, home of Kingstonian FC, for this League Cup first round clash
with Southern Division Wimbledon. Bangor got off to a great start when
Sam Blackmore put Cheryl Foster through for the first after only ten minutes.
City were always on top but didn't turn possession into goals whilst Wimbledon
rarely threatened to equalise.
The second half followed
the pattern of the first with Bangor looking the better side. City should
have killed the game off but took until fifteen minutes from time to score
the second. A cross across the face of the goal fell to Manon Lloyd Williams
to score her first of the season. Bangor then suffered a lapse in concentration
when the Wimbledon striker was allowed time in the box to shoot low into
the corner of the net. This set up an uncomfortable last ten minutes for
City but they deservedly won through to the next round.
Wimbledon manager
Fred Brocklewell noted: “I was impressed with Bangor – they knock the
ball around nicely. But I’m not too worried about losing because I’m more
concerned with the League than the Cup.”
Bangor team (3-5-2):
Nicky Davies, Gill Smith, Bev Dignam, Rebecca Owen, Louise Barlow (Siwan
Elenid), Cheryl Foster, Kelly Davies, Iona Williams (Katie Williams),
Manon Williams, Ceryl Jones, Sam Blackmore (Aisla Orlik).
