Three points but
City pay heavy price
Bangor City 1 Liverpool 0
- Axa FA Premier League Sunday 11th November 2001
Bangor beat Liverpool
with a Bev Bourner header but suffered the blow of losing winger Manon
Lloyd Williams with a broken leg. Manon was due to play for Wales this
weekend but will now miss the rest of the season and Bangor will be weaker
for her loss.
Liverpool had the
better of the first half putting City on the back foot. Jade Thomas created
several good chances for Liverpool but the former Bangor player lacked
a finishing touch. Liverpool also hit the bar as they enjoyed most of
the possession. However, it was Bangor who scored when Bev Bourner leapt
to meet a corner to head her first goal of the season to give City a fortuitous
halt-time lead.
Bangor started the
second-half brightly but were rocked by the Lloyd Williams injury. Manon
bravely won the ball in the Bangor box but unfortunately broke her leg
in the challenge. City had to reorganise but stuck gamely to the task
in hand. Ellen King made two excellent runs but her shots were well saved
by the Liverpool keeper. With minutes left Liverpool should have snatched
an equaliser as Jade Thomas was allowed a free run on goal. Having made
her way into the box she slid the ball to a team-mate but with the goal
at her mercy she blazed over.
Bangor team (4-5-1/
3-5-2): Nicky Davies, Gill Smith, Bev Bourner, Alwen Williams, Louise
Barlow, Katie Williams, Siwan Elenid, Iona Williams, Manon Williams (Kelly
Davies), Ceryl Jones, Aisla Orlik (Ellen King) .
