Bangor make it a hat-trick
over Man City
Bangor City 2 Man City 0
- Axa FA Women's Cup Sunday 22nd April 2002
Bangor Girls continued
their winning ways with a 2 - 0 victory over Manchester City at Farrar
Road giving them a third victory over the Manchester team this season.
Bangor squandered a hatful of chances early on but thirty minutes in Cheryl
Foster ran on to a through ball from Kelly Davies and calmly rounded the
keeper to slot home. Ten minutes into the second half Bangor doubled their
lead when a slick passing move involving Ceryl Jones, Alwen Williams and
Tania Jones culminated in Cheryl Foster beating a defender and blasting
into the top right corner. Bangor were in total control but unlucky not
to capitalise on a series of good chances that should have given them
a much more flattering scoreline.
Bangor team (4-4-2):
Nicky Davies, Gill Smith, Louise Barlow, Laura Pritchard (Elain Owen),
Alwen Williams, Iona Williams, Kelly Davies (Ellen King), Ceryl Jones,
Tania Jones, Katie Williams, Cheryl Foster.
Five goals and two red cards
as Bangor clinch cup glory
Man City 2 Bangor City 3 -
Axa FA Women's Cup Sunday 9th December 2001
Bangor made it through
to the fourth round for the first time in two years after overcoming a
determined Manchester City on a cold day in Didsbury. The game got off
to an amazing start as with less than a minute on the clock a poor clearance
fell to the Manchester striker Savage to fire home from the edge of the
area. Bangor responded almost immediately as Ceryl Jones scored with a
low shot into the corner of the net with only eighty seconds gone in an
amazing start to the game. The home team then had the better of the half
but failed to take their chances and this proved costly when Bangor snatched
a lead on the stroke of half-time. Siwan Elenid chased a ball that looked
to be going out but managed to pull the ball back to Gill Smith who curled
it into the top corner.
Bangor played much
better football after the break and deserved their third goal when Ceryl
Jones latched onto a Blackmore pass to grab her second of the game. The
game took an unexpected turn when an altercation between a Manchester
defender Brown and Sam Blackmore saw the home player sent off and Blackmore
booked. Minutes later Bangor were then reduced to ten players when the
tempestuous Barlow received her marching orders for violent conduct. The
incidents lifted the home team and they pulled a goal back through Savage
after a ball over the defence but Bangor managed to survive the last fifteen
minutes to take their place in the next round. Bangor's player of the
match midfielder Kelly Davies was delighted with the win 'We did well
to hang in there in the first-half after an incredible start but I thought
we were the better team after the break although Man City never made it
easy.'
Bangor team (4-4-2):
Nicky Davies, Elain Owen, Bev Bourner, Alwen Williams, Louise Barlow,
Katie Williams (Cheryl Foster), Kelly Davies, Gill Smith, Siwan Elenid,
Ceryl Jones, Sam Blackmore.
Late winner for Bangor
in Manchester mud

Axa FA Premier League Sunday 4th November 2001
Bangor were faced
with a small and muddy pitch on a wet day in Manchester. The home team
had the better of the first half and took the lead midway through the
half. Poor defending allowed a Amy Gregory a free-shot on the edge of
the box that she tucked into the corner of the net. Bangor's best chance
came after a good run by full-back Gill Smith but her finish was poor.
The visitors improved
in the second-half but were still finding the conditions difficult. Smith
had to head a Manchester City corner off the line and keeper Nicky Davies
made a good stop low down to keep the home team out. With twenty minutes
left Bangor equalised after a Sam Blackmore corner was powerfully headed
in by Smith. The visitors then piled on the pressure and got their reward
with three minutes left. A strong run by Smith saw her fouled in the box
and Ceryl Jones made sure with the penalty to give the Welsh side three
points.
Bangor team (4-5-1/
3-5-2): Nicky Davies, Gill Smith, Bev Dignam, Alwen Williams, Louise Barlow,
Donna Edwards, (Katie Williams) Siwan Elenid, Iona Williams, Manon Williams,
Ceryl Jones, Aisla Orlik (Sam Blackmore) .
