Owls downed by super City

Sheffield Wednesday 1 Bangor City 4 - Axa FA Premier League Sunday 21st October 2001

Bangor travelled to Staveley to face Sheffield Wednesday knowing that the pundits' odds were on a home victory. City though had other ideas and produced a great team performance to record a 4-1 victory in the Derbyshire rain. Bangor dominated from the start and Cheryl Foster had several good chances but was denied by great saves from the Owls' keeper. Ten minutes before the break Foster finally broke the deadlock as she rounded the keeper to give City a deserved half-time lead.

The second-half continued in the same vein as the first with Bangor dominating all areas of the pitch. Foster got her second after a delightful through ball by Kelly Davies, and Manon Lloyd Williams ran forty yards to score a great solo goal. Wednesday briefly rallied and pulled a goal back through Marsden who took advantage of a rebound off the crossbar. Bangor though weren't going to be denied and Iona Williams made it four with a fine shot from the edge of the box. Two-goal star Cheryl Foster said, "It was great to win and see the whole team working hard for each other. Hopefully we can now put a good run together and move up the league".

Bangor team (4-5-1): Nicola Davies, Gill Smith, Alwen Williams, Elain Owen, Louise Barlow, Siwan Elenid, Cheryl Foster (Susie Cunnigham), Kelly Davies, Manon Williams, Donna Edwards (Iona Williams), Katie Williams.

City settle for yet another draw

Bangor City 2 Sheffield Wednesday 2 - Axa FA Premier League Sunday 7th October 2001

Bangor recorded their fifth draw of the season against a skilful Sheffield Wednesday side. Tania Jones, who is due a cartilage operation at the end of the month, was forced to play in goal after keeper Nicky Davies was injured in training. Another surprise on the team sheet was the return of Alwen Williams after an absence of six months. Wednesday got off to a terrific start and for twenty-five minutes played Bangor off the park with great football. It was no surprise when they took the lead as Sonia Moore scored with a far post header. The shell shocked home side had to reorganise and brought on Cheryl Foster and Louise Barlow in a double substitution. City got back into the game and Katie Williams nearly levelled before half-time but saw her follow up shot go over the bar.

Shortly after the restart Katie Williams did get on the score sheet after an excellent run and shot. Bangor then took the lead when Foster crossed for Ceryl Jones to claim her tenth goal of the season. Wednesday were always threat and Moore got her second of the game to level the scores. City were unlucky hitting the woodwork three times and Barlow nearly got the winner but for some brave goal-keeping Assistant manager Gwennan Jones was philosophical "we had the chances to win the game but if you said to me we would get a draw after the terrific start Sheffield made I would have settled for that!".

Bangor team (3-5-2): Tania Jones, Gill Smith, Alwen Williams, Bev Dignam, Laura Pritchard, (Louise Barlow) Siwan Elenid, (Cheryl Foster), Kelly Davies (Ailsa Orlik), Iona Williams, Manon Williams, Ceryl Jones, Katie Williams.
