WordPerfect 8 for Linux - Installation

The installation was carried out on a Mandrake 9.x system.
BEFORE  installing WordPerfect 8 for Linux from the Corel CD the following RPMs are required

ld.so-1.9.5-13mdk.i586.rpm
libc-5.3.12-32mdk.i586.rpm

(both the Mandrake and Red Hat versions of these libraries can be downloaded from   http://padresoftware.com  )

save these to a directory under /home/USER/ (where USER is your user login Id)   e.g.   /home/USER/rpm
The RPMs listed above are the Mandrake packages (  flagged with mdk after the version number  ).
To install the packages open a terminal window,  type su,   and enter the root password to login as root.
CD to where the rpm files were saved   e.g.   cd /home/USER/rpm  and on the command line type

rpm -iv ld.so-1.9.5-13mdk.i586.rpm
to check the install
rpm -qi ld.so-1.9.5-13mdk

then do the same for libc

rpm -iv libc-5.3.12-32mdk.i586.rpm
rpm -qi libc-5.3.12-32mdk

hopefully both libraries will have installed OK

next create a WordPerfect directory as suggested in Step 2 of the WordPerfect CD Quickstart guide   mkdir /usr/lib/wp
(this will be needed when the WordPerfect install dialog prompts for an install directory)
type exit to drop out of superuser mode and close the terminal

at this point it is probably best to  REBOOT  the system

after rebooting open a terminal window,  type su and enter the root password
change directory to the WordPerfect Install CD   cd /mnt/cdrom
have the WordPerfect Serial Number handy plus names and locations of installed printers (see below)
then just follow steps 6 and 7 of the WordPerfect install QuickStart guide

6. type pwd, ENTER to verify the directory
(could also type dir to check out the file names)
7. type ./install.wp

a gui install dialog should now start and will ask for the serial number and configuration preferences
use the directory created above   /usr/lib/wp   when prompted for an install directory

with a bit of luck the install should complete OK

Now check the install by navigating to the   /usr/lib/wp/bin   directory and click or double click on  xwp  (the execute WordPerfect binary)

hopefully WordPerfect should start up if all has gone well

Note that the install does NOT create a desktop icon or a menu entry under office > wordprocessors

a menu entry for WordPerfect under office > wordprocessors can be created manually from Mandrake Control Centre
(specify   /usr/lib/wp/bin/xwp as the program to execute)

to create a desktop icon

1.   right click on desktop and select Create New
2.   select Link to Applicatiion
3.   under the General tab give the application name (WordPerfect)
and click or double-click on the icon to change it
( a WP icon may be available in the applications list)
4.   under the Execute tab browse to /usr/lib/wp/bin/ and select xwp and click OK

other post installation issues

1.   there is a font utility for adding Type 1 fonts to WordPerfect
run  /usr/lib/wp/shbin10/xwpfi  to startup the font program
(Mandrake users should consider importing MS Windows fonts using the Control Center first)
Linux Type 1 fonts live in   /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1/  on my system
and can be imported into WordPerfect from there using the font utility

2.   there is a bug in the WordPerfect filtrix file filtering system
which handles the importing of .doc and other wordprocessor file formats.
This can be corrected by installing a fix written by the OpenOffice team
which can be downloaded from

www.linuxjournal.com/article.php?sid=5655

where to get WordPerfect 8 for Linux

1.   the Corel download of WordPerfect has been unavailable for some time
an image version was,  until recently,  available from another site
but this seems to have been taken down within the last few months (since 10/2003)
seaching on   wordperfect + linux + install   may turn up something

2.  boxed WordPerfect 8 for Linux CD including manual can be ordered from

www.softwarebargains.co.uk

navigate to COMPUTING and select LINUX  (  listed as available 01/2004  )
