People driving to the house via Switzerland would be well advised to stop for the night just north of the Swiss border (prices are far higher in Switzerland). This is about six to eight hours drive (depending on your speed, number of stops etc.) from Calais. The map below shows all of Alsace but so as to leave yourself no more than eight or nine hours driving the next day we would suggest an hotel in the South of Alsace and near the motorway which runs close to the Rhine (the German border). However, if you have more time a visit to the villages in the hills is thoroughly worthwhile.

List of hotels in the Aosta area

People driving to the house, taking either a route through the Mont Blanc Tunnel, or through the Great Saint Bernard Tunnel, may well find this area a suitable stopping place for the night. It is between 8 and 10 hours by car from Calais, and allows visitors to arrive at the house in reasonable time the next day.

The list is in three sections:
1) Hotels near the Mont Blanc to Aosta route
2) Hotels near the Great St Bernard Tunnel to Aosta route
3) Hotels in the town of Aosta and near the motorway after it; suitable for either route

Please note that the places closest to Mont Blanc (e.g.Courmayer) are very popular ski resorts, and the entire area attracts many visitors on public holidays. Therefore hotels can be very booked up at certain times.

We have found that very small 'one-star' or 'two-star' hotels are usually very cheap (about 27 to 35 pounds for a double room), and are usually very clean and quite adequate for one night.
