July
A good win for the first team against bottom side Stalbridge was needed
looking at the upcoming fixtures, and that was exactly what was done.
Maximum points capped a good day, and gives the team a bit of confidence
travelling to high-flying Weymouth next Saturday.
In a week's time, on
Monday 12th, Wimborne hosts the Campbell Cup final. This is a 14 over
affair held every year and this year sees reigning champions Colehill
against Ferndown. A big crowd is always guaranteed, as is an
entertaining game, so come along if u can!
26th June
The mid-point of the
season was brought up with a miserable wet day. The first team managed
to get a couple of overs in before the rain set in, whilst the second
team game had already been called off due to the Bmouth and OB 2nd team
withdrawing from the league.
Mid-season
averages for the first team have been worked out by Charlotte and can be
viewed here.
Next week sees the first
of the return fixtures, so Stalbridge travel to Wimborne to play the
first team hoping to avenge the defeat they suffered in the first game
of the season. The second team hope to face a less strong Parley 2nds
outfit than before when they boosted the team with some first teamers.
24th May
The juniors of Wimborne
Cricket Club train on a Friday evening, and we would like for any
volunteers to come along and help supervise them. No coaching experience
is needed, just the ability to keep an eye on a group of kids under the
overall supervision of a coach. If you can spare a couple of hours,
please head to the ground on a Friday evening, and you can have a drink
in the bar afterwards as well!
22nd May
A second Premier Division
win of the season for the first team against Blandford, while the second
team bowled well, but couldn't score the runs against Blandford's second
team. More details on the respective teams pages.
Next weekend sees the
local derby between Wimborne's first team and Colehill at Colehill, with
the second team hoping for a win on home soil against Corfe Mullen.
15th May
Wimborne's Saturday teams
both lost again this weekend, but both put up good fights in the quest
for a victory against the two Poole Town teams. More details on the
respective teams pages.
Next week sees both sides
playing the sides from Blandford, with the first team playing at home,
and the second team away.
8th May
Both Wimborne sides lost
on Saturday, to differing degrees! The first team lost at home to
Weymouth, while the second team lost heavily to Ferndown. More details
on the respective teams pages.
Next week the first team
are away to last year's Premier Division champions Poole Town, with the
second team playing at home to Poole Town's second team.
New Season Approaching
The first league games of
the season take place this weekend for both Saturday and Sunday sides.
The Saturday first team's game is away to Stalbridge, who they narrowly
beat in the corresponding fixture last season. Captain Colin Randall
will be wanting to get the league campaign off to a excellent start with
a good performance. To read a preview of the premier division season,
follow the link to the Western Gazette newspaper which is an excellent
place to read about cricket during the season. Western
Gazette
The second team are at
home to Parley 2nds in division 3 after two friendly defeats, and will
also want to set the tone for a good season with a win on home soil.
The Sunday league side are away to Speeliners in division 5, whilst the
Sunday friendly side compete in the curry cup challenge at home to West
Meon.
April 2004
Fixtures now out and
new season on the way!
The fixtures for the new
season are now available for all to see. They will posted on the
respective teams pages on this site, and all the members should soon be
receiving their copy of the fixture booklet, along with the newsletter,
which I also hope to be posting here soon. With only three weeks to go
until the first 'friendly' game of the season, I'm sure you'll all join
me in hoping for some warmer weather! Nets sessions have proved
fruitful, with some new members turning up, and some of the present
members looking more than useful!
With the new start of the
season we also want to start collecting memberships subscriptions as
early as possible. It is only £35 for adults and £20 for students and
juniors. These prices rise by £5 for those paying after 31st May, so it
is in your best interests to pay early! Please make your cheque's
payable to 'Wimborne Cricket Club', and hand them to Charlotte Ridout
who is collecting the memberships this year after Victoria and Aaron
have left for pastures new this season. We do of course wish them
congratulations as they got married in the close season and thank them
for all their hard work over the many seasons here.
Below is the newsletter
sent to all members before the season starts, produced by Don Fromow.
| Dear
Club Member,
As
the new season approaches, it is time to say a few things before
the first matches on 17/18 April.
President
I
expect that most of you will know by now that David Lawes has
replaced Brian Sadgrove as the President of Wimborne Cricket
Club. David is also holding the fort as Hon. Treasurer.
Vice-Presidents
Welcome
to six new V-P’s – David Andrews, David Braddock, Mr and Mrs
Paul Harris, Sarah Steele and Tony Dibben. The number of
Vice-Presidents now exceeds one hundred, and the club is very
grateful to them for their continued support.
Overseas
Player
At
the time of writing there is no definite news about an overseas
signing, but we wait upon events in hope.
President’s
Day
President’s
Day is on Friday 6th August, when there will again be
a ‘past’ vs ‘present’ match (2pm start). This is always
an enjoyable occasion with a large number of spectators, and I
hope that Wimborne Cricket Club will turn out a strong side –
as it did last year.
Groundsman
Chris
Nutland has returned as groundsman, and he will be responsible
for the square only. No doubt he will also advise on such
matters as weed killer for the outfield.
Ground
Manager
After
two or three years of ill health, it is great to see Steve
Ratcliffe back in effervescent form! Last year ‘Hanhams’
became very frayed at the edges, but under Steve (who has been
well supported by Gordon Sturgess and Roland Hughes) the ground
has undergone a transformation – both around the perimeter and
inside the buildings. Refer to Steve if you find something which
still needs attention.
Membership
Secretary
Since
the publication of the booklet fixture list, Victoria Pitfield
has resigned as Membership Secretary, and her place has been
taken by Charlotte Ridout, whose address and telephone number
appear in the booklet. Playing members should send their subs to
her (NOT to the treasurer) and cheques should be made payable to
‘Wimborne Cricket Club’. No cash please!
Mr &
Mrs Aaron Day
Congratulations
to Aaron and Victoria who were married on February 18th
in St. Lucia.
Sadly
– but understandably in that they live in Blandford – they
have both decided to throw their lot with that town’s cricket
club.
Wimborne
Cricket Club is very grateful to Aaron and Victoria for their
services over the past years and they can be assured of a warm
welcome at ‘Hanhams’ whenever they care to come. (And
remember Aaron, you now qualify to play for the ‘Past XI’ on
President’s Day!)
Showers
Mike
Hopkins has recently installed six new showerheads to replace
the four old ones which had long passed their ‘sell by’
date.
Minster
Sports
I
am told that Minster Sports will allow a 10% discount to ‘bona
fide’ club members wishing to purchase sports equipment
Subscriptions
Details
about subscriptions appear in the fixtures booklet, and these
should be sent to Charlotte Ridout by cheque. There is a £5
discount for those paying before 31st May – why not
take advantage of this offer?

Wimborne
in Bloom Quiz
For
the past few years, Wimborne Cricket Club has entered a team of
six in the annual Wimborne in Bloom quiz at the Allendale
Centre, and has usually languished near the bottom. This year,
thanks in large measure to Paul and Gillian Dyer, the club was
placed 8th out of 38.
Teas
As
for last year. Janet Tory will provide the weekend cakes – as
well as undertaking everything for the mid-week games – and
Laura and Amy Ridout will again be the tea servers.
I
understand that in an emergency the wives of Peter Barker and
Tim Bartlett will be willing to step in if they are free to do
so.
Refuse
Wimborne
Cricket Club is responsible for refuse (apart from bottles from
the bar) and all players are urged to use the bins which should
have liners. The latter are kept in the kitchen. The bins at the
far side of the ground are the responsibility of the Cricketers
Arms.
Selection
Inform
your team captain if you are available for selection –
preferably during the previous weekend. Should you feel you are
being overlooked or unfairly treated, please speak to Paul
Charlwood, Chairman of Selectors. Don’t just gripe!
Sponsorship
In
addition to the club’s former sponsors, there are two new ones
– Merley House Holiday Park and Wessex (animal health,
nutrition, equipment). Please support all our sponsors.
Website
The
website – www.wimbornecricketclub.co.uk
continues to be maintained by Richard Fenner, and is the port of
call for results, news etc.
Bournemouth
and West Hampshire Water
Streets
Meadows home for the elderly is currently being redesigned, and
as a result the water authorities have had to carry out
diversionary work necessitating the lifting of turf on part of
the outfield and digging behind the scorebox. This should all be
made good before the cricket season begins.
Priests
House Museum
The
former flag, now threadbare, was given to the Priest’s House
Museum last year. I understand that the museum is shortly to
present an exhibition of
Wimborne
life in the ‘Seventies’. The cricket club has assembled some
memorabilia for this project.
-----------------------------------------
Last
year was not a very good season for Wimborne, either on the
field or off it, but there now appears to be a wind of change.
The 1st XI captain, Colin Randall, has been doing his
homework during the winter months, Steve Ratcliffe is
transforming ‘Hanhams’ and Chris Nutland is stamping his
expertise on the square again. Furthermore, some enthusiastic
and able members have joined the committee – and I am
optimistic about the immediate future.
Whether
or not the season is a good one will depend on all players
making themselves available regularly – and not just when they
feel like it. It was no fault of Colin Handley that last year
the 2nd XI had such a disastrous season – he had to
consistently surrender his best players to the 1st
XI.
In
conclusion – if you have read this far – may I wish you all
on behalf of your hard working committee an enjoyable and
successful cricket season.
Yours
sincerely,
Donald
Fromow
(Hon
Secretary – Wimborne Cricket Club)

Team captains for the
new season
The team captains and
vice-captains for the new season have been finalised. For the first
team, Colin Randall will captain with Gav Will as his vice-captain. The
position of second team captain and vice-captain have been taken by
Peter Barker and Tim Bartlett respectively. They felt that they could
commit themselves to the second team for the whole season, and could
give the team the leadership we will require to gain promotion from
division three.
We continue to want to
hear your ideas about Wimborne Cricket Club, so continue to get in touch
via the contact page, or via e-mail to myself
or the chairman, John
Ridout.
December 2003
Here is the latest
newsletter that has been produced by John Ridout (Chairman) to keep the
members in touch with what has been going on in the club since the end
of the last season.
Dear
Member,
Another season has passed by and the long winter nights are with
us. Soon the shortest day will have come and gone, days will get
longer and the prospect of a new season will fill your minds.
That said your committee are already planning for next season
and beyond.
The topics which are being discussed over next few meetings
include ground maintenance, selection policy, subscription and
membership fees, catering and social events.
Every member has the opportunity to join in these debates by
contacting any member of the committee who are named later in
this newsletter or by e-mail via the club website on www.wimbornecricketclub.co.uk
.
The Committee comprises :
John Ridout - Chairman
Nigel Davies - Vice Chairman
Donald Fromow - Secretary
David Lawes - Treasurer
Colin Randall
Gavin Will
Robbie Whittle
Richard Fenner
Paul Charlwood
Victoria Pitfield
Aaron Day
Colin Handley
Peter Barker
Roland Hughes
Roger Hook
From time to time it is necessary to co-opt to the committee and
new appointments will be notified to you at the appropriate
time.
Season 2004
The League season starts on the first weekend in May. The
Saturday First XI continues in the Premier Division.
The Saturday second XI has been relegated to Division 3 on the
back of a poor season.
The Sunday League side gained promotion again last year and will
now play in Division 5. The club XI and the mid week teams will
continue to play friendly cricket.
There have been some changes to the playing conditions in the
League and some amendments to the Laws of Cricket. Details of
these will be circulated in a pre-season newsletter. However the
game is still 11 a side and involves use of a bat and ball.
Next season is an important one for the club. It is about time
that the Premier title returned to Wimborne. Colin Randall has
been actively recruiting new players and subject to form and
fitness a top five position is achievable next season from which
a push for higher honours can follow.

With a
radical re-organisation of the Dorset League in 2005 Division 3
is not a good place to be since that is the level that the old
Bournemouth League Clubs will enter the competition. It is vital
that the club gain promotion from Division 3 next year and
consequently put some distance between themselves and the major
re-organisation.
The Sunday league side is making good upward progress and
encouraging new young players and there is no reason why they
should not remain successful next year.
However success can only be
achieved by a settled, motivated team.
Experience (old age) suggests that a settled teams is key to
success. It is important that team spirit is built in a team so
that each player plays for each other. In turn this tends to
lead to a team performance greater than its individual elements.
Teams can only be settled if players commit themselves to
turning out for the club regularly. After all at the start of a
season you commit to play for a club, you know your holiday
plans. Let the selection committee know which games you cannot
play rather than those which you can!
Some thoughts for the future
We would like some feedback on the following matters:-
Do you think an overseas player is good for the club?
If so what services can he offer the club and where can he be
housed?
When can you give some time to help Chris Nutland with the
ground?
What skills have you got that you would be prepared to share
with the club?
What nights would you like to practice on and what facilities do
you need?
Are you able and willing to help coach the young cricketers or
offer them transport to and from their matches?
When should the AGM be held?
Who would like to be Secretary when Donald retires?
Please let me know.
You can contact me by phone on 888298 after 7.00 in the
evenings, by e-mail at chairman@wimbornecricketclub.co.uk
or via the club website, on the contact
page. Or you can speak to any member of the committee.
A Christmas Thought
We all lead busy lives and sometime the true meaning of
Christmas is lost. Christmas is a time for the family and for
giving. My Christmas wish is that once you have enjoyed your
family celebrations that you give some thought to your Cricket
Club and make a New Year resolution to give something extra to
Wimborne Cricket Club in 2004.
Happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year
John Ridout
Chairman.
