Grand Prix 9 (18.9.07)
Steve Smith has really made his mark since becoming a
member of Cippenham Table Tennis Club a few months ago. After not playing for a
year and moving down to this area from the Midlands, Smith has been one of the
most regular participants in training sessions at the club. He made an impact
early on, winning the seventh Grand Prix series in the early summer. Now he has
repeated that feat by winning the ninth series that was recently completed. Consistency
is the name of Smith’s game: he did not win any of the weekly events but
finished either second or third in all the five that he competed in.
Smith is about to make his debut for Cippenham
Outlaws in the Slough League, teaming up with Graham Trimming, Neil Bird and
Choi Lee as Cippenham attempt to regain the local title lost for the first time
in fourteen years last season. He has also recently made his debut for
Cippenham’s third team in the British League, become a valued member of the
Club’s Management Committee and qualified as a Tournament Organizer, all in the
space of a few months.
The latest Grand Prix was Cippenham’s best yet with
record participation levels. A total of forty-two players took part with weekly
attendances up to twenty-one. Another newcomer, Simon Barnes, won two of the
three weekly events while Graham Trimming, Paul Baker, Eddie Mitchell and Steve
Buck were successful in the others.
