News Season 2003-04:

European Youth Championships 17-24.7.04
Five of Cippenham's brightest young stars were in Budapest for this annual event.  Bradley and Gavin Evans sat on the bench while their England team mates Paul Drinkhall and Darius Knight took the silver medals in the cadet boys' team event.  However, Joanna Parker was ever present for the junior girls' team, winning seven of her ten matches, as was Melanie Farquhar (cadet girls, 3 out of 9) and David Hayes (Ireland junior boys, 2 out of 5).  Joanna made it though to the last 32 of the singles while Bradley Evans got to the quarters of the consolation.
 
Cippenham Veterans' Summer 2-Star Open 4.7.04
This titles in this popular summer event stayed in the same hands from 2003 and were another success for the Welsh contingent.  Steve Hall again beat Dave Harvey in the men's final while Regina Donovan made it three Cippenham titles in succession by beating Carmen Vajdi in the women's.  Cippenham's Paul Baker reached the semi-final after a good run while new signing Diccon Gray was beaten by the champion one round earlier.
 
Cippenham Young Players' Summer Festival 19-20.6.04
Another record-breaking event at Cippenham, with seventy entries having to be returned and sixteen tables kept busy for two days, culminated in a home win for Melanie Farquhar in the U16GS and for Hampshire's Ashley Willetts in the U16BS.  The event, the biggest ever at Cippenham, also heralded the part-opening of the Club's new facilities with brand new wash rooms and changing facilities. Organizer and Referee Ken Phillips and his assistant Jan Chapman ensured that the tournament ran like clockwork and the coach load of 20 players from Scotland started their long return trip not too late.
 
Gainsford Cup Finals 13.6.04
Cippenham's women's team secured a hat-trick of victories in this national competition at Derby.  By beating Elgre 5-4, Bramley Ebenezer 5-3 and Le Hoi also 5-3, Cippenham clinched the title for the third year running during which time Gemma Chapman has been unbeaten.  For Sue Hayes and Jane Dickens is was also their third winners' medals.
 
Cadet Six Nations Tournament 11-13.6.04
Cippenham's Melanie Farquhar made her England debut in this event and won four matches in the team competition on Friday and Saturday as England finished fourth.  Two wins out of five in the individual singles group on Sunday, however, were not enough to allow her to progress into the knock-out stage.  The Evans brothers, Bradley and Gavin, were both part of England gold-medal winning boys' team in the same event.
 
English National Under-10/11/12/13 Championships 5-6.6.04
Gavin Evans won all five titles open to him at these national championships.  He retained his U11 and U12 Boys' Singles titles and added also the top age of U13.  With brother Myles he won the U13 Boys' Doubles and with another Cippenham protégé, Eddie Mitchell, the U12 Boys' Doubles.  Eddie was also runner-up in the U10 Boys' Singles while Katie Rule did likewise in the U12 Girls' Singles and also won the U12 Girls' Doubles.
 
Annual General Meeting 30.5.04
Ken Phillips stepped down after seven years as Chairman of Cippenham TTC but retained his place on the Committee as Coaching Officer.  In the ensuring reshuffle Robin Farquhar, formerly Deputy Chairman, took Ken's place the the helm while Sue Hayes became the new Deputy Chairman.  Her previous position of Bookings Officer was taken by Anne Farquhar while 14-years old Catherine Hayes has taken over the position of Events Officer, never previously filled.  Graham Trimming (General Secretary), Peter Hillier (Treasurer), Jacquie Lovell (Social Officer) and Dave Bull (Club Captains) all retained their positions.
 
German Youth Open 29-30.5.04
Cippenham members Joanna Parker and Gavin Evans furthered their international reputations with gold medals at the German Open.  Joanna beat current European no. 1 Iveta Vacenovska (CZE) to win the Junior Girls' Singles title while Gavin, although not playing in the final, was a member of England's gold medal winning cadet boys' team.
 
Slough League AGM 27.5.04
Cippenham members Jeremy Bateman (General Secretary), Peter Hillier (Treasurer), Graham Trimming (Fixtures Secretary) and Clive Perry (Competitions Secretary) were re-elected into their positions at the Slough League's Annual General Meeting.
 
British League About Turn 19.5.04
News has just reached the Club that there has been an about turn on the decision at the British League Conference to extend the Premier Division.  The 13 to 7 votes in favour of the proposition were not sufficient to satisfy the two-thirds majority required and so the proposition has, retrospectively, been defeated.  As a consequence the Cippenham teams have been placed in Division 1 South, Division 2 South and Midlands and Division 4 South and Midlands.
 
National Cadet Masters 15-16.5.04
Melanie Farquhar capped a great season with second place in the National Cadet Masters staged at her Cippenham club.  She lost only to winner Lauren Springthorpe and third-placed Sarra Wang and won all but two of her other eleven matches 3-0.  Gavin Evans beat runner-up Darius Knight 3-0 for the first time but finished just out of the medals in fourth place.  Not bad for an 11-year old with four more years at this age group!  Brother Bradley finished a disappointing seventh while another brother Myles failed to qualify for the second day's play.  Sylvana Bielec finished one place ahead of her ranking in tenth place in the girls' event.
 
British League Conference 8.5.04
Following a restructuring of the British League with an extended Premier Division of sixteen teams it was confirmed that the Cippenham first team will play in the highest strata next season.  As a consequence the second team have been promoted to the First Division and the Club has also been rewarded by a place for a third team in Division Four.  David Hayes picked up the award for the Division 2 South Player of the Season and the Club was also honoured with the Programme of the Year award for the second year running. Slough Masters Tournament 4.5.04
Mark Banks made it three in a row as Slough League Masters champion by beating Slough Closed champion David Hayes 3-1 in the final.  On an adjacent table Cippenham Vagabonds (Walter Aldridge, Laurence Orton, Catherine Hayes) beat Burnham Zebras 4-2 in the Divisions 2/3 Handicap final to extract revenge for their defeat by the same opponents in the previous week's Dilger Cup final.
 
Home International Championships 1-2.5.04
Three Cippenham members marked their appearances on the Isle of Man in the Home International Championships with gold medals.  Making his debut for Ireland, David Hayes won the Junior Boys' Team event and also won a bronze medal in the Boys' Singles.  Bradley Evans did likewise for England in the cadet events while younger brother Gavin did even better, winning the Cadet Boys' Singles as well as the team gold.
 
National Junior Masters 1-2.5.04
Joann Parker was unbeaten as she took the gold medal in the girls' event at her Cippenham club.  Gemma Chapman also signed off her junior days with a fifth-placed finish while the best results came from Melanie Farquhar and Emily Tucker who blitzed their rankings to finish in tenth and eleventh places respectively.
 
English Schools' Individual Championships 24.4.04
Three Cippenham members won their respective events at Stoke-on-Trent.  Joanna Parker (U19), Gavin Evans (U11) and Katie Rule (U11) all took gold while Myles Evans was third in the U13 boys' event.
 
British Primary Schools' International Championships 18-18.4.04
Katie Rule won two gold medals, in the team and individual girls' events and she led her England team to success in Guernsey.  Eddie Mitchell also made his international debut in this event - England boys finished second to Wales.
 
Cippenham Junior 2-Star Open 4.4.04
Cippenham's Melanie Farquhar maintained her great form of the season by winning a pulsating Girls' Singles final against Rachel Jamieson 11-6 in the fifth.  The boys' final could not match the spectacular play in the girls' match but provided a worthy winner in top seed Umair Mauthoor who beat Ashley Willetts.
 
National Junior League 4th Session 3.4.04
Cippenham Boys' B team have won the Southern Region section of the National Junior League.  The team of Oliver Shaw, Ashley Shaw and Sebastian Bielec comfortably beat all three opponents to bring the title to the Club for the first time in six years.
 
Slough Sports Awards 22.3.04
Cippenham Table Tennis Club picked up another three awards at the Mayor of Slough Annual Sports Awards.  For the first time the Club won the Senior Club of the Year title in recognition of its increasing reputation in the national scene at senior level and repeated success in the Gainsford Cup.  Club Secretary Graham Trimming won the Service to Sport Award for his outstanding contribution over a period of 30 years and David Hayes won the Junior Sportsman of the Year for his performances in 2003 that included becoming the second-youngest Slough League Men's Singles champion.
 
County Championships Junior Premier Division 2nd Weekend 21-22.3.03
Bucks, by claiming seven out of eight available points, elevated their position from fourth to second position during the final weekend and only missed out on the championship by one point.  Great displays from Bradley Evans, Gavin Evans, James Milton, Gemma Chapman and Emily Tucker included a 10-0 thrashing of Derbyshire in the final match to decide second place and relegated their previously higher-placed opponents to third.
 
Slough League title 9.3.04
By beating Chalfont Corinthians 10-0 Cippenham Rogues (Paul Baker; Mark Banks; David Hayes; James Milton; Sean Pickin; Mark Jackson) were confirmed as champions of the Slough League Division One completing a unique treble as the first club in the League's history to win the first, second and third divisions outright in the same season.  Cippenham Buccaneers and Cippenham Vagabonds were confirmed as champions of Division Two and Three respectively a few weeks ago.  The top title was Cippenham's eleventh in succession and twentieth overall.
 
British League 4th Weekend 6-7.3.04
Both Cippenham teams finished fourth in their respective divisions, 1 South and 2 South and both had good results in the final weekend.  The first team's 5-3 win over third placed DML Plymouth was the highlight as was Lee Dredge's record of six wins from eight.  David Hayes did one better for the second team whose best performance was a 5-3 win over an Oxford team that won their other three matches.  The first team's fourth place looks enough to qualify them for the Premier Division if that is enlarged to sixteen teams next season.
 
Slough Closed Championships 29.2.04
It was the Hayes family that stole the show at the Slough Closed with David retaining his Men's Singles and Boys' Singles titles, then joining up with mum Sue to win the Mixed Doubles and sister Catherine for the Junior Doubles.  Sue also won the Ladies' Singles while Mike Rhodes' eighth win in the Veterans' Singles created a record.  Other winners were Sylvana Bielec and Eddie Mitchell.
 
Junior British League 2nd Weekend 14-15.2.04
Cippenham Girls' B team finished off the good work they started in November by clinching the Division 2 title by five clear points.  Melanie Farquhar, who lost only 2 of her 20 matches during the season, finished top of the division's averages with Sylvana Bielec and Caroline Linz in third and fourth places.  The top girls' team were fifth in the Premier Division while the young third team had a good weekend and finished second in the bottom half play-offs in Division 3.  The boys' team improved by two places to come fourth in Division 1.
 
Veterans' British League 2nd Weekend 7-8.2.04
Despite the absence once again through injury of Clive Payne, the Cippenham veteran men's team managed to retain their status in Division 1 of the Veterans' British League.  Although winning only one match over the weekend, that a 6-0 drubbing of bottom team Shamrocks, Cippenham held onto the third position held from the first weekend.
 
National Junior League 3rd Session 7.2.04
A power failure less than half-way through the day's play unfortunately curtailed the third session of the NJL.  Before that both Cippenham boys' teams had recorded good victories but the girls' team was part way through their first match when play was halted.  The Cippenham club apologizes to all the other teams who had a frustrating day.
 
Bucks Closed Championships 1.2.04
All the county titles came back to Cippenham with another superb showing from the Club's players at Milton Keynes.  David Hayes and his mother Sue won the MS and WS titles while Mike Rhodes  won VS.  The doubles titles were won by Rob Hansell & Mark Jackson (MD), Jane Dickens (WD), David & Sue Hayes (XD) and Mike Rhodes (VD)
 
Carter Cup 2nd Stage 25.1.04
Slough's junior boys' team bowed out of the national Carter Cup at Graham Spicer TTC, New Malden, beaten by holders Plymouth 5-4 despite Slough being 4-2 up at one stage.  Prior to that Slough secured victories over Sutton 5-1 and Thames Valley 5-2.  David Hayes (7 wins), James Milton (4) and Oliver Shaw (4) were the Slough team.
 
Women's British League 2nd Weekend 24-25.1.04
When number one player Marina Zarzycka cried off ill and her place was taken by Jacquie Lovell and Melanie Farquhar it signaled the end of Cippenham's hopes of a high place in the WBL Premier Division and virtually resigned them to bottom position in the division re-constituted after the first weekend.  So it proved with Cippenham unable to gain any points but they did lose three of their five matches only 4-2.
 
Alec Brook Trophy 2nd Stage 24.1.04
Slough's veteran men's team were knocked out of the national Alec Brook Trophy in Grimsby.  After beating the host team and Sunderland both 5-3, Slough lost to North Herts also 5-3.  Mike Rhodes (6 wins), Paul Baker (5) and John Barclay (2) were the Slough team.
 
Hammersley Cup 1st Stage 24.1.04
Slough's cadet girls' team made it through to the final stages of the national Hammersley Cup with a 6-3 victory over North Middlesex at Ellenborough TTC.  Sylvana Bielec (3), Catherine Hayes (2) and Angela Oetiker (1) were the successful team.
 
Cippenham Veterans' 2-Star Open 18.1.04
Fred Dove was the surprise winner of the Men's Singles title at the bi-annual veterans' open.  The unseeded Suffolk player, who has been in great form this season, saw off the challenge of second seed and previous champion Steve Davis (Surrey) in the final.  Regina Donovan traveled from Wales to claim a second Women's Singles crown when she beat Reading's Sharon Mitchell in the final.  Cippenham's Dave Bull was the best of the locals as he reached the final of the Men's Consolation.
 
British League 3rd Weekend 11.1.04
Much better results this time with a maximum eight points from the Club's two teams in the British League.  Back on home soil and almost at full strength the teams both consolidated their positions in the top halves of their divisions and reduced the threat of relegation to almost zero.  An unbeaten performance from Mark Butler and three wins out of four for Martin Adams and Terry Haley saw the first team record 5-3 victories over both EBS-Orange Northampton and OLOP IMPACT.  Robert Hansell and David Hayes returned perfect records for the second team, with Mark Jackson also picking up a man of the match award, as they beat NETTS 5-3 and EBS-Orange Northampton II 7-1.
 
Cippenham Under-14/16 1-Star Open 10.1.04
David Hayes and Melanie Farquhar produced home wins for Cippenham in this popular one-day event for which entries had to be returned.  Another home winner was Prabdeep Panesar in the U16 Boys' Consolation.
 
Leinster Junior Open 3.1.04
Cippenham’s David Hayes won the Leinster Junior Open in Dublin beating John Murphy 3-1 in the final.  This win will put David at number one in the Irish junior rankings and a certainty to be selected for the summer’s European Youth Championships for his adopted country.
 
Alec Brook Trophy 1st Stage 28.12.03
Slough's veteran men's team just about came through the first stage of the Alec Brook Trophy.  One player failed to appear so it was left to Mike Rhodes (3) and Paul Baker (2) to defeat Maidenhead 5-2 before an SOS produced a third player in the form of Graham Trimming for the other two matches.  Mike (2) and Paul (1) scored in a 3-5 defeat to Reading and as Staines had already beaten Reading 5-4 a 5-3 win was required over Staines in the final match in order to progress.  In a nail biting encounter Paul (3) and Mike (2) produced exactly the correct scoreline.
 
Carter Cup and Bromfield Trophy 1st Stage 14.12.03
Slough's two junior teams, comprising entirely of Cippenham players, successfully came through the first stage of their national competitions.  The boys, playing at Cippenham, beat North Middlesex 5-3 and Reading 5-0 with David Hayes, James Milton, Oliver Shaw and Ashley Shaw all scoring important wins.  The girls, playing at Hastings, overcame the host team 5-2 with Sylvana Bielec unbeaten in three matches and Caroline Linz and Jenny Hansell scoring one each.
 
British League 2nd Weekend 13-14.12.03
Cippenham's two teams had indifferent results from the second weekend of British League matches.  The first team, with Lee Dredge replacing the injured Clive Payne, mustered only one win from their four matches in Devon while the second team only bettered that by a draw at Ashford.
 
Hungarian Cadet Open
Cippenham's Gavin Evans added another international gold medal to his gathering collection when he partnered Darius Knight (Surrey) to success in the doubles at the Hungarian Cadet Open.  They beat French doubles titleholders Vincent Baubet and Jean Gillome in the final.
 
National Junior League 2nd Session 13.12.03
Cippenham Boys' B team finished the day top of Division 1 after impressive displays from Oliver Shaw, Ashley Shaw and Sebastian Bielec.
 
Portuguese Junior Open 6-8.12.03
Two more international titles come the Club's way as Joanna Parker won the Junior Girls' Singles and Gavin Evans was a member of of the gold medal winning team in the Cadet Boys' team event.
 
Cippenham Banded 2-Star Open 7.12.03
63 players entered the second annual running of the Cippenham Banded Open.  The host club's most successful player was David Hayes who got through to the final of the Men's Band 1 but then lost to scratch entry Umair Mauthoor.  Other winners were Sarah Hudson (Women's), Charles Acquah (Band 2) and Jeff Rigby (Band 3).
 
Buckinghamshire Junior Closed 29.11.03
Cippenham players won all the events at the Bucks Junior Closed, indeed only one title has got away in eight years!  Ashley Shaw (JS), Matthew Tucker (CS), Chris Witchell (U13S) and the Shaw brother, Oliver and Ashley (JD) were the successful players.
 
Southern Region Final Trials 22-23.11.03
Cippenham players again dominated the SR Trials winning in each in the guise of Gavin Evans (JB), Melanie Farquhar (JG), Myles Evans (CB) and Sylvana Bielec (CG).  Also through to the National Trials are: Chris Hansell, Myles Evans, Oliver Shaw (all JB); Emily Tucker, Sylvana Bielec (both JG); Ashley Shaw (CB) and Katie Rule (CG).
 
Veterans' British League 1st Weekend 22-23.11.03
Cippenham made a good start to their first season in VBL Division 1 despite the absence of star player Clive Paine.  Three wins from five matches secured a solid third place, three points behind the top two but three ahead of fourth place.  Terry Haley, on VBL debut for Cippenham, starred with 9 wins out of 10 while Mike Rhodes (4) and Paul Baker (3) chipped in with important wins at just the right time.
 
Dave Bull appointed Club Captain 9.11.03
Committee member Dave Bull was appointed into the vacant position of Cub Captain.  Dave's new responsibilities will include liaison with the team captains and players in the Slough League teams.
 
Club Championships 9.11.03
Robert Hansell retained his Men's Singles crown at the annual Club Championships and also won the Tweenies' (between junior and veteran) Singles.  Melanie Farquhar picked up three titles in the Women's Singles, Girls' Singles and Cadet Somgles while James Milton, who was also runner-up in the men's event, won the Boys' Singles.  Mike Rhodes regained his Veterans' Singles title while there were other titles for Dave Bull, Chris Hansell, David Hayes and Alex Polding.  Although short in numbers the strength of the men's events was extremely high for a club event.
 
National Junior League 1st session 8.11.03
Cippenham teams returned better than expected results from the first session of the NJL at their home club.  The boys' top team lie in second place in Division 1 and the second team are top of Division 2.  A young and inexperienced girls' team excelled to finish in fifth place in their division.
 
Roskilde Junior Open 1-2.11.03
Cippenham’s David Hayes visited Denmark to play with the Irish Junior Development Squad at the Roskilde Open in Copenhagen.  David excelled in winning the Band 3 Singles, reached the last 32 of the Junior Boys Singles, and lost in the semi-final of the Junior Boys Doubles.
 
County Championships Junior Premier Division 1-2.11.03
With a 6-4 win over Cheshire, a 5-5 draw with Yorkshire and a narrow 4-6 loss to defending champions Glamorgan Bucks junior first team are placed fifth in the Junior Premier Division after the first round of matches played at Cippenham.  An all-Cippenham team represented Bucks: Bradley Evans; Gavin Evans; James Milton; Gemma Chapman; Emily Tucker.
 
Cippenham 2-Star Open 25.10.03
Cippenham's Robert Hansell came so close to winning the Men's Singles at this annual event coming back from 2-0 down in the final against Jack Boult (Sx) to drawn level 2-2 only to lose at 11-8 in the fifth.  The quarters were were the action was as Robert (seeded 5) beat top seed Jerome Jonah 3-0 and Boult (seeded 7) beat second seed Chris Beckley after coming back from 5-0 down in the fifth.  The women's event was won by Val Murdoch (He).
 
Junior British League 1st Weekend 18-19.10.03
Cippenham teams returned from Stoke with a mixed bunch of results.  Pride of place goes to the girls' "B" team who head Division 2 by two points at the half-way stage.  Melanie Farquhar (90%) and Sylvana Bielec (78%) were the mainstays of this team.  A spirited performance from an inexperienced girls' "C" team produced three points in Division 3 while the top girls' team made a similar number of points in the Premier Division.  The most disappointing was the boys' team that mustered only two points and are currently bottom of Division 1.
 
Anniversary Party Annual Awards 9.10.03
At the Club's annual Anniversary Party, held to celebrate seven years since the opening of the purpose-built Cippenham Table Tennis Centre, the usual awards were made and more beside.  The main award of the evening, the Karen Mitchell Memorial Outstanding Contribution Award, is given for dedicated voluntary service to the Club and officers are ineligible.  It was fitting that this year Charles Mitchell, Karen's widower, presented the award to Karen's great friend Frankie Butterworth for her untiring help with the catering at weekends.  Frankie is always also on hand at the Club's twice-yearly cleaning days.  Two new awards were also made this year - the Senior Player of the Year to Kuldeep Singh who won 54 consecutive matches in his debut season in Division 2 of the Slough League - and the Junior Player of the Year to Gemma Chapman who won three gold medals at the British Schools' Championships.
 
Cippenham Cadet 2-Star Open 5.10.03
William Maybanks (He) and Rachel Jamieson (E) were the winners of this annual event which marked Organizer Robin Farquhar's debut with a massive 111 entries.  Local successes came in the form of Sylvana Bielec runner-up in the Girls' Singles, Ashley Shaw semi-finalist in the Boys' Singles and Katie Rule winner of the Girls' Consolation.
 
Home Countries International Championship 19-21.9.03
Cippenham member Joanna Parker picked up another gold medal as England won the women's team event in Largs, Scotland.  Joanna also reached the semi-final of the singles event before losing to the eventual champion Helen Lower.
 
British League 1st Weekend 13-14.9.03
Both Cippenham's teams acquitted themselves well when the British League kicked off with the first series of matches at Cippenham.  New signing Terry Haley starred for the first team with seven wins from eight matches and although the team lies in fourth place with five points they are only one point behind leaders Ellenborough in a very open division.  The second team have one point less but lie in third place in another evenly contested division apart from runaway leaders London Progress III.
 
Women's British League 1st Weekend 6-7.9.03
Cippenham dropped just one point in the first weekend of the Women's British League and lie in second position in the Blue section of the Premier Division, equal on points with leaders Irish Ladies who shared a 3-3 draw.  All other matches were won as Cippenham's newest signing, the Russian Marina Zarzykca, won eight of her ten matches while Gemma Chapman and Lesley Keast won seven each.
 
National Club of the Year Awards 6.9.03
Cippenham picked up yet another award when presented with the ETTA PremierClub Club of the Year runner-up award in the Excellence category.  This is the second time in three years that the Club has been runner-up in this category, having been third in 2002.
 
Bucks Junior Trials 6.9.03
Cippenham players filled the top six places in the boys' section and the top four in the girls' in the county trials held at Cippenham.  Top bpys were Bradley Evans, Gavin Evans, James Milton and David Hayes while the girls were headed by Emily Tucker, Sylvana Bielec, Caroline Linz and Jenny Hansell.
