Cippenham Young Players' Summer Festival 18-19.6.05
2 days, 180 players, 17 tables, 350 entries including a large party from Scotland - statistics that show the enormity of this year's Young Players' Summer Festival, superbly organized and refereed by ken Phillips.  Sweltering temperatures could not dull the table tennis and home players were successful as well.  melanie Farquhar won her fourth straight U16 girls' title while Eddie Mitchell, the national U11 champion, won that age group and the U13s but lost in the final of the U12s.  Major other winners were Raihan Muhith, Garth Kinlocke, Michael Bates, Sally Hughes, Rebekah March and Chloe Thomas.

National U10/11/12/13 Championships 4-5.6.05
Cippenham's Eddie Mitchell is the new England U11 Boys' Singles champion after beating his bogey player Lewis Gray en route and Joshua Boult in the final.  He also teamed up with Gavin Evans to win the U13 Boys' Doubles but the same combination lost in the final of the U12 event.  Gavin, as expected, added to his huge haul of winners' medals, now totaling fifteen in five years of this event, by winning the U12 and U13 Boys' Singles.

Cippenham have won the Ormesby Cup, the national knock-out competition for men's teams, for the first time.  The team of David Hayes, Mark Banks and Paul Baker best West Sutton 5-0, Norton (Potteries) 5-2 and ELGRE (Nottingham) 5-4.  Having qualified as runners-up only in the first two stages this was an unexpected result helped by the addition of Mark Banks to the team.  He won five matches, David seven and Paul three, including the vital decider in the final match against ELGRE with the match score standing 4-4.  The Slough junior boys' team featuring David Hayes and Ashley Shaw of Cippenham and Ben Wiseman of Chalfont finished third in the Carter Cup.  On Sunday Cippenham's cadet girls' team beat Chesterfield 5-3 but lost to Medway 5-4 and Reading 5-4.  However, that was still good enough for the team of Lindsey Armstrong, Catherine Hayes and Stephanie Mitchell to claim the silver medals as top of a three-way tie.

English National Junior Masters 14-15.5.05
Melanie Farquhar justified her top ranking position by winning the girls' title at the National Junior Masters played at her home club.  The crucial match came late on Sunday when she beat great rival Sarra Wang 1107 in the fifth.  Emily Tucker played well to finish in sixth position while Bradley Evans came seventh in the boys' event.

English National Cadet Masters 7-8.5.05
Cippenham member Gavin Evans remained unbeaten all weekend to win the prestigious National Cadet Masters at Cippenham.  Taken to a fifth game only three times in his thirteen matches, and all on the first day, Gavin proved himself well ahead of the field and he still has another three years in the same age category.  Brother Myles Evans finished sixth for a double family celebration.

Cippenham Scoundrels used their 190-points start to good effect to overcome Burnham Lions in the final of the Slough League handicap competition.  Once Phil Coburn had put Cippenham on track with a good first set display the result was never really in doubt and he was supported well by Ray Burbidge and octogenarian Georgia Veneer.

Home International Junior/Cadet Championships 23-24.4.05
Four more gold medals from Belfast.  Gavin Evans retained his Cadet Boys' Singles title and also won silver in the team event.  Brother Bradley did it in reverse - gold in the team and silver in the Junior Boys' Singles.  Melanie Farquhar won gold with England in the Junior Girls' Team event and reached the final of the singles, only to lose out to Naomi Owen (Wales) who plays for Cippenham in the Women's British League.

The Hayes family once again featured on the winners' rostrum but this time it was Catherine upstaging her brother David.  Whereas David, top seed and firm favourite for the Boys' Singles went out to eventual winner Matt Ware (Hants) in the semis, Catherine went from the number three seeded position to capture her first open title in the Girls' Singles.

National Junior League Southern Region 4th Day 5.3.05
Cippenham Boys' C team (Joe Cheong, Eddie Mitchell, Alex Polding) leapfrogged above Kingfisher in the final day's play in the National Junior League to finish the season in a very creditable 3rd place.  The boys' and girls' champions of the event played at Cippenham were Chesham High School and Ellenborough.

Cippenham Veterans' 2-Star Open Championships 27.2.05
There was a Reading and Berkshire double at the ninth running of the Veterans' Open as top seeds Hari Gehlot and Sharon Mitchell won the major honours.  Runners-up were Dave Crowley (Middx) and Haruko Posford (Surrey).

Slough League title 24.2.05
By drawing their final match 5-5 against nearest rivals Chalfont Argonauts, the Cippenham Rogues team of David Hayes and the Shaw brothers Oliver and Ashley ensured that the Slough League title came to Cippenham for the twenty-first time and the twelfth in succession - both, not surprisingly, records!

Ormesby Cup Stage 2 21.2.05
David Hayes was the unbeaten star of the show, winning all nine of his matches, as Cippenham exceeded expectations by finishing second in their group and qualified for the final stage of the Ormesby Cup, the national men's club knock-out championship.  After losing 3-5 to Elgre Nottingham, Cippenham were on to beat Centre Fitness (Swindon) 5-4 and Challoner (Guildford) 5-2 with Mike Rhodes and Oliver Shaw also picking up crucial victories.

Junior British League 2nd Weekend 12-13.2.05
Despite losing their last two matches, Cippenham girls' team finished national runners-up in the Premier Division.  A cliff-hanger of a finish saw Cippenham waiting on the last result of challengers Team Peniel before clinching second spot by one point.  The top boys' team finished third in Division 1 while the inexperienced second teams finished in the bottom half of their respective divisions.

Veterans' British League 2nd Weekend 12-13.2.05
By coming back from 3-1 down to draw 3-3 in the final match against St. Marks, Cippenham climbed into fourth place in Division 1 and staved off relegation on sets aggregate.  The weekend started well with a 4-2 win over Fullerians but then came three successive defeats before that last gasp reprieve.

British League 4th Weekend  5-6.2.05
The British League season concluded with the two top Cippenham teams maintaining their positions from last year - fourth in Divisions 1 South and 2 South & Midlands.  The new third team finished third in Division 4 South & Midlands.  Highlights of the weekend were the first team's come back after losing the first two matches against the top teams to gain seven of the other eight points and eclipse OLOP for fourth place at the last.  Rob Hansell's Saturday evening deuce in the fifth win over David Barr to clinch victory over the Reading rivals proved vital, but Lee Dredge (8) won most matches over the weekend.  Rob Lemon won seven out of eight for the second team that beat second-placed Guildford but lost third place when beaten by Oxford for their only dropped points of the weekend.  The third team won two and drew one with Phil Clarkson being the top performer.

Carter Cup Stage 2 23.1.05
Slough's junior boys' team of Ollie and Ashley Shaw and Chalfont's Ben Wiseman beat all opponents to win through to the finals of the national Carter Cup.  Ollie and Ashley remained unbeaten on the day.  Slough will be hoping that star player David Hayes is available for the final in May at Derby and win the cup that last came to Slough in 2001.

Women's British League 2nd Weekend 22-23.1.05
Oh! so close!  Nine points out of a possible ten, including a win over champions DML Woolwell, saw Cippenham get to within one point of the first and second placed teams in the final weekend's matches in the WBL.  What a shame only five points were gained from the first round of matches in September.  Lesley Keast won nine of her ten matches, Naomi Owen eight and Gemma Chapman five.

Wilmott Cup Stage 1 22.1.05
An all-Cippenham line-up of Mike Rhodes, Ollie Shaw and Paul Baker, representing Slough,  finished only third in their first stage group at Ashford in the national knock-out competition for men's teams and so have failed to qualify for the next stage.

Scotland v. Ireland 21.1.05
Cippenham's David Hayes played for Ireland against Scotland in a junior international at Drumchapel TTC, Glasgow ahead of the weekend's West of Scotland Open.  David beat Scott Johnson and shared in a doubles success but lost to Craig Howieson in a 2-3 defeat for Ireland.

British League 3rd Weekend 16.1.05
The were mixed fortunes for Cippenham's three teams as the first team drew one match and lost one,  while the B and C teams both won one and lost won.  The B and C teams' results were predictable, even though both lost only 3-5 to the top teams in their divisions whereas the first team drew 4-4 with second-placed DML Woolwell but gave De Vere NETTS a win that lifted them off the bottom of Division 1 South.

Munster Open 15-16.1.05
David Hayes, one week after becoming Irish junior champion, added another title to his collection with the Boys' Singles title at the Munster Open.  David also came fourth in the men's event.

Irish Junior National Championships 9.1.05
Cippenham's David Hayes got his best result yet when he won the Irish Junior National Championships without dropping a single game beating Peter Graham in the final.

Cippenham Under-14/16 1-Star Open Championships 9.1.05
England cadet international Melanie Farquhar retained her U16 Girls' Singles title at her home club's event but needed to come back from 0-2 down in the final.  The counterpart boys' event was won by Suchira Gallage (Mi) and the U14 events by Patrick Thomas (WAL) and Megan Sparrey (Mi).  Cippenham players Eddie Mitchell and Rachel Farquhar gained awards by winning the U14 consolation events.  A near full entry of 113 kept twelve tables going all day and the event was well conducted by Ken Phillips and Jan Chapman.

Gainsford Cup & Ormesby Cup Stage 1 2.1.05
Winners for the last three years, Cippenham are out of the Gainsford Cup, the national knock-out cup for women's teams.  A win against Le Roi 5-2 but losses against Hollington 4-5 and Ashford 3-5 left the Cippenham team of Gemma Chapman, Sue Hayes and Catherine Hayes in third place and out of the qualification positions.  The men, meanwhile, in the Ormesby Cup qualified by virtue of the non-appearance of Rowhedge.  A 1-5 defeat to Ashford for David Hayes, Paul Baker and Ollie Shaw was the only match but Cippenham qualified in second place!

British League Re-arranged Matches
The ETTA British League Committee have taken the unprecedented step of allowing Cippenham to re-schedule the two matches missed at Okehampton in December.  Such was the severity of the incident and the innocence of the Cippenham players involved that the match against BFIT Wiltshire has been re-scheduled for Sunday 16th January and that against OLOP IMPACT I for Saturday 5th February.

British League 2nd Weekend 11-12.12.04
Cippenham II made great strides in Division 2 South & Midlands, winning three and drawing the other of their four matches.    In the series of matches staged at their home venue David Hayes and Rob Lemon both won seven out of eight matches, Mark Jackson five and Paul Baker three. Highlight was the last match of the weekend when a 0-3 deficit against EBS-Orange Northampton II was turned into a 5-3 victory.  The third team won two and lost two to maintain third position in Division 4 South & Midlands with Chris Hansell the star play with seven wins.  The first team won one match and drew another on Saturday at Okehampton, Devon, before circumstances beyond their control prevented them from completing their final two matches.

Carter Cup Stage 1 11.12.04
Slough's junior boys' team, comprising Cippenham's Shaw brothers Oliver and Ashley together with Chalfont's Ben Wiseman, successfully came from the first stage of the national Carter Cup.  Slough beat Guildford 5-1, Reading 5-2 and Plymouth also 5-2 to qualify for the next stage as group winners.  Oliver, who missed the British League matches as a consequence of playing in this event,  went through the day unbeaten.

Cippenham 2-Star Open Championships 5.12.04
Jack Boult (Sx) retained his Men's Singles title that he won for the first time in 2003 but otherwise it was Cippenham players who came to the fore in their home tournament.  Robert Lemon, a product of the Club's coaching scheme, beat the top seed Steve Hall in his semi-final to set up a challenge to the champion in the final.  The Women's Singles was won by Sarah Hall who plays for the Club in the Junior British League.  She beat local player and top seed Gemma Chapman in the final.  Of particular note was the success of Oliver Shaw, another recent product of the Club's coaching who won the consolation event from a very strong entry.

Irish Senior Top Twelve 4-5.12.04
Cippenham’s Irish junior international David Hayes missed his home club’s open championships after accepting a late invitation to participate in the Irish Senior Top Twelve.  It was a good decision as David exceeded expectations in achieving seventh position.  The results were so close that just one additional win would have catapulted him into third position.

Southern Region Trials 20-21.11.04
Cippenham's dominance of this event was not so great as in recent years but still six players from the host club managed to fill the top five places in their categories to qualify for the next stage towards the National Junior and Cadet Masters.  Melanie Farquhar was the star, winning the junior girls' event, with Caroline Linz and Emily Tucker also qualifying, as did Catherine Hayes and Rachel Farquhar in the cadet girls and Oliver Shaw in the junior boys.

Veterans' British League 1st Weekend 13-14.11.04
Diccon Gray, on his Cippenham debut, led the way with eight wins from ten matches as our team finished joint third at the half-way stage in Division 1 of the Veterans' British League.  Wins against PAA II 5-1 and St. Mark's 4-2, a 3-3 draw with Fullerians and losses 2-4 to BATTS and 0-6 to DML Woolwell slightly exceeded expectations.  Mike Rhodes and Paul Baker both won three times to help secure five important points from the Stoke-on-Trent weekend.

Bucks Inter-League 7.11.04
Oliver and Ashley Shaw made their senior debuts for Slough in the men's division of the Bucks Inter-League and both were unbeaten as Slough beat both Aylesbury and Chalfont 8-2.  Cippenham colleague Graham Trimming also won three times for Slough in these matches.  The final match against star-studded High Wycombe was lost 10-0 by Slough but not before the Shaw brothers had shocked their more illustrious opponents including another pair of brothers from the Cippenham club, Robert and Chris Hansell.

County Championships Junior Premier Division 6-7.11.04
Bucks juniors have put themselves into a great position to secure the national championship with an unbeaten display in the first weekend of matches played at Cippenham.  Slough men's singles champion David Hayes won all six of his matches while Cippenham colleagues Bradley Evans (5), Emily Tucker (4), Caroline Linz (3) and Myles Evans (2) all recorded great results.  Yorkshire and, crucially, Cheshire were both beaten 6-4 and Durham succumbed 8-2.

Annual Club Awards 4.11.04
The Club tonight gave its annual awards at the Anniversary Party held to celebrate eight years of playing in our purpose-built venue.  The main Karen Mitchell Memorial Award for Outstanding Contribution was made to Paul Baker in recognition of the tremendous assistance he has given the Club over the past year during the rebuilding and extension of part of the facility.  Paul was also heavily involved in the original project eight years ago and organizes tournaments on the Club's behalf as well.  The Junior Player of the Year award was shared between Irish junior international David Hayes and England cadet international Melanie Farquhar while Robert Hansell's progress into the top 100 players in the country earned him the Senior Player of the Year award.

Junior British League 1st Weekend 9-10.10.04
Two of Cippenham's four teams returned from the half-way stage of the Junior British League in second place in their divisions.  The top boys' team did especially well to gain seven points from a possible ten in Division 1, second only on sets aggregate, when it is considered that the Shaw brothers, Ashley and Oliver, were making their debuts having played in the National Junior League last season.  This earned them the accolade of Team of the Weekend.  Marc Armstrong was key to this team with an 80% record.  The top girls' team are second in the Premier Division with six points with Welsh recruit Sarah Hall winning eight times and England cadet international Melanie Farquhar five out of eight.  The second teams did not fare so well but Catherine Hayes returned the best aggregate of the weekend with nine out of ten for the second girls' team.

Cippenham Cadet 2-Star Open Championships 3.10.04
For the first time ever at a junior or younger age group open championships held at Cippenham no players from the host club appeared in any of the finals.  Most of Cippenham's best young players were elsewhere, playing in other events, and that left the door open for Matt Ware (Ha) and Holly Stubbings (E) to take the top honours.  The event was organized by Robin Farquhar, refereed by Mick Strode and attracted a slightly below par entry of 78.

Women's British League 1st Weekend 25-26.9.04
Cippenham's women's team lie in joint third place after a first weekend that sets the team up for a fight when the league recommences in the new year.  Two early defeats, both 2-4, against the top two teams, DML Woolwell and Irish Ladies, were followed by a draw with BATTS Team Peniel and then, on Sunday, two victories, 6-0 against Blackpool and 4-2 over Woodfield.  Welsh international star Naomi Owen made her debut for Cippenham, winning six of her ten matches.  Gemma Chapman returned the same record while Lesley Keast won only one less.

ETTA Annual Awards 11.9.04
Cippenham's Social Officer, Jacquie Lovell, was awarded the prestigious Volunteer of the Year Award at the annual awards dinner at Lilleshall.  This awards confirms Cippenham as one of the top clubs nationally and is a fitting tribute to Jacquie who has worked tirelessly planning and delivering all the catering at Cippenham during the many weekend events over the past eight years.  Jacquie is also the Club's Volunteer Champion and has recently successfully finalized the building extensions to the lounge and kitchen and managed the fit out of the kitchen area.

Bucks Junior Trials 11.9.04
Cippenham players again had good results at the Bucks Junior Trials, winning three of the four events.  The junior boys' event was won by Bradley Evans with his brother Myles second and James Milton third, David Hayes fourth and Ashley Shaw fifth.  Caroline Linz won the junior girls' event with Myles Evans and Eddie Mitchell filled the top two places in the cadet boys and Catherine Hayes was second in the cadet girls.

British League 1st Weekend 4-5.9.04
Cippenham have entered an additional third team in the British League this season and all three teams acquitted themselves well in the first weekend.  On their home patch the first and second teams both collected four points out of a possible eight with the highlight being the first team's 6-2 win over the fancied DML Woolwell team from Devon on Sunday morning.  Otherwise there were Saturday draws against De Vere NETTS and B.F.I.T. Wiltshire and a disappointing 3-5 defeat against London Progress II.  Robert Hansell made the transition from last year's second team very well with five wins from eight matches.  The second team had two easy wins, 8-0 over Ashford II and 7-1 over EBS-Orange Northampton II but suffered defeats 1-7 to top of table Bedford Modern and 3-5 to Guildford.  The new third team started emphatically at Southall with an 8-0 thrashing of Guinness Polska II and then beat London Progress V 6-2 and Nottingham IV 5-3 but lost 3-5 to Ellenborough II.
