This is an abridged version of the recently issued Brompton Safety Upgrade Notice

Many modern bicycles including the Brompton, have aluminium handlebars. These can eventually break, especially if subject to hard riding. As this could result in a nasty fall or serious injury, please  read this notice carefully, and act on it as soon as practical.

Since launching the Brompton three improvements to handlebars have been fitted. The most recent in September 1999 were heavier and significantly stronger. Brompton have also developed a crossbar for the Brompton handlebar; this is a safety option, recommended for those who give their bikes exceptionally heavy use.

What you should do.

If you brought your Brompton before September 1999,  the handlebars will be of the old type. Otherwise please check; the illustrations below show how the current, heavier, handlebars differ in appearance from the earlier types.

Old Handlebars

On bikes with either of these two styles of handlebar, please arrange an upgrade

Large diameter:- L type Standard diameter :- S type

 New Handle Bars

If your bike has these stronger bars, there is no need to take action now.

However, if you ride hard, you are advised, for long term safety, to fit a crossbar (retail £8.75), or alternatively replace your handlebars at regular intervals.
