The
small village of East Coker is close to the Somerset / Dorset border is
a typical west country village with cottages made from the local yellow
stone, many are still thatched. The local church is also the resting
place for the ashes of T.S. Eliot, the poet, whose ancestors
emigrated to America.
There
is so much to see and do in the Yeovil area, here are just a few
examples of places to visit:
Monacute House and Gardens and Barrington Court are just some of the
many National
Trust
properties in the area.
Sherborne Castle and the town of Sherborne itself with its many tea
rooms.
There are plenty of beaches, country walks and cycle paths in the
area to explore.
Pay a visit to the Fleet Air Arm Museum and see Concorde or the classic cars at the Haynes Motor Museum.
The
historical cities of Bath, Bristol, Exeter, Salisbury and Wells are also
within easy driving distance of Granary House.
All
in all East Coker is an ideal touring centre for Somerset and West
Dorset.

Wood - Lovely walks, you can often see deer. No dogs in wood.
Montacute
House (NT) 1601 - One of the finest Elizabethan houses in the UK with
attractive formal gardens.
Montacute
- Lovely old village of great importance in Medieval times. Climb to the
top of St Michael's Tower with views over the whole of South Somerset.
Selection of pubs and tea rooms. Montacute has been used as a film set
in the past.

- Small market town with attractive shops and a new swimming pool.
Ilchester
- Was the County town in the 19th Century and an important Roman
garrison on the old fosse way. There is a museum on the history of the
town. Just up the road is the Fleet Air Arm Museum (Yeovilton) with its
exhibitions on the Falkland war and Concorde. Lytes Cary (NT) is also
close to the town.
Kingsbury
Episcopi - Cider Farm at Burrow Hill famous for cider brandy.
East
Lambrook - Manor house with gardens designed by Margery Fish.
Martock
- Town Tree Farm Nature Reserve. The Church at Martock is the 2nd
largest in Somerset with bullet holes in the roof from the time of the
Civil War.
Muchelney
- 10th Century Abbey (English Heritage), Priests House (NT) and John
Leach Pottery.
Barrington
- Lovely Village. 16th Century Barrington Court (NT)
