Reform of the calendar
In 1752 the chief excitment was over a bill for the reforming the calendar passed that year. The Julian calendar, instituted B.C.45 by Julius Caesar, was arranged on the belief that the year consisted of 3651/4 days, which was a trifle too long. The mistake had been know for a while, and in Elizabet's reign Pope Gregory XIII, had put the calendar right, and provided for the future by arranging that the century years should not be leap years unless the century itself was divisible by 4. But Protestant England refused to accept the reforms of a pope. Now the change was to be made. As we were by this time eleven days behindtime, the act ordered that in 1752 the day after 2nd September should be the 14th September. This caused a great outcry amongst the lower orders on the grounds that they were being deprived of their wages for those days. Leading to the popular cry, "Give us back our eleven days"!
