Who We Are
Most of us are patients (or hopefully ex patients !) and some of us are carers.
We are a registered charity and were formed by a Declaration of Trust on the 27th November 1992 by Dorothy and a small group of trustees. Dorothy retired from the committee several years later.
We have around 30 local members. Some of these are not able to attend meetings, so we send them newsletters. Others attend meetings for mutual support.
The group ‘leaders’ are:
Gwen Harlow from BRIGG
Derek Devlin from MARKET WEIGHTON
There are others who do not wish to be recognised as 'committee members' but who do help a great deal. Many of the members make contributions of one sort or another to the running of the group.
We cover a large geographical area around the East coast, including North and East Yorkshire, Hull and Lincolnshire. We don't adhere to any strict boundaries.
We hold bi-monthly coffee mornings. (See Local Events page). These coffee mornings are an opportunity for patients and carers to meet with others who have similar problems in a relaxed, informal atmosphere. We sometimes have speakers at the meetings.
Two out of the six annual meetings are organised as meals out. We choose places where smaller portions are possible, and suitable foods on the menu. These meals out are a good way to re-build confidence to eat out, as we all know just what the problems are, having ‘been there’ ourselves. Therefore the newer members can feel relaxed.
We have information leaflets, and encourage patients to send in any tips or advice they have found useful for inclusion in Newsletters. We are currently seeking a new editor for these. We also trawl the Internet for new information on research and aspects of treatment.
