In 2001 we raised £550 by selling programmes at the Pirelli International Rally,
held at Carlisle Airport.
The following donations
were made:
| Carlisle Aid for Women | £75
|
| Scalesceugh Hall | £100
|
| Cockermouth Mountain Rescue | £50
|
| Able to Play Scheme | £200
|
| ICRF | £50
|
| Farmers Benevolent Fund | £75 |
In 2002, our main fundraising event was for Cancer Research UK.
On Friday 11th October, members of our Circle, with help from friends, family and colleagues braved the rain drenched streets of Carlisle in a tour of the local pubs and clubs.
10 of us dressed from head to toe in pink to raise funds for Cancer Research UK’s Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign. This annual October promotion has now become a regular event in BL& B’s calendar. Charity convenor Barbara explains: “Cancer Research UK, (previously known as ICRF) is our National Association’s adopted charity. Each Member Circle tries to support CRUK by raising/donating as much cash as possible each year. This is our second year of selling pink ribbons. Last year 3 of us raised about £150, but this time thanks to the generosity of Carlisle’s pub-goers we raised £574”.
The 10 volunteers put a lot of effort into deciding what to wear for the occasion, and a truly remarkable selection of pink gear was on display!

Wigs, bras, basques, p.v.c snakeskin jackets, feather boas and tiaras, were just some of the outfits worn. “We had a brilliant night”, said chairman Louise, “It was great fun dressing up in pink for the night and we collected much more than expected which is fantastic."
Look out for us again next year. We're aiming even higher, and hope to raise over £1000!
2003 FUNDRAISING UPDATE
On 10 October 2003 we held our biggest charity event ever - A casino night and grand raffle.
Around 250 guests attended this black tie occasion which was held at the Shepherd's Inn, Carlisle.
The guests enjoyed a two course knife & fork buffet, which was followed by exchanging lots of cash for gaming chips to play on a huge variety of gaming tables including roulette wheels, blackjack, pig racing, wheel of fortune etc. At the end of the evening the people with the highest value of chips were the winners of many exciting and valuable prizes, which our members had persuaded local businesses to donate, in exchange for a mention in our programme.
In addition to the casino games there was also a bottle tombola, raffle and dancing.
