Dear Muldoon Friends

Just a quick update to let you know the dates of the next three
shapenote singing workshops in May and June. They will be as follows:

* Saturday 9 May, 1.30–4.30pm
* Saturday 6 June, 9.30–4.30pm (part of the West End Festival)
* Saturday 13 June, 1.30–4.30pm (part of the West End Festival)

As usual the venue will be Hillhead Baptist Church Hall
(aka The Tryst), Cresswell St, Glasgow G12 8AE -- just off the
top end of Byres Rd.

The last of these will be directly linked to the concert on
Tuesday 16 June I mentioned in previous newsletters.
Entitled "Wondrous Love", its theme is the way the shapenote
tradition has inspired modern American composers,
specifically focussing on William Duckworth's
reinterpretations of William Walker's Southern Harmony, as
well as outlining the historical antecedents of early
American choral music. This will involve a group of
volunteers singing some songs from the Southern Harmony, to
contrast with Duckworth's postminimalist variations
performed by the Glasgow chamber choir Cathures. If you're
interested, please get in touch and/or come to one of the
above sessions where we'll present these songs (among
others). As usual, we'll teach them by ear, at a level
accessible to complete beginners, explaining the background
as we go. Basic music-reading ability is helpful but not
essential. The music is highly accessible and enjoyable to
sing. If you've never been to one of these events before
but are curious to see what it's all about, why not come
along? And if you're one of our regulars, we need you as
much as ever!

Best wishes
