“HOW SWEET THE SOUND”

All-day Shapenote (Sacred Harp) Singing Workshop

Glasgow, Saturday 18 October 2008, 10.00am–5.00pm

Come and learn to sing shapenote songs with Muldoon’s Picnic. This robust and passionate American folk hymn style, also known as “Sacred Harp” singing after one of the best-known collections of songs, has come to wider attention in films such as Cold Mountain, and is a lot of fun to sing. The sound is thrilling and invigorating, and accessible to all: ability to read music is not essential, nor is a “good” voice. No previous experience or knowledge is necessary: we will teach the songs by ear and explain the background of this fascinating tradition. The day will end with a half-hour recap of the songs learned so if you like, you can invite friends along at about 4.30pm to hear what you've been up to. But shapenote singing is more a participative than a spectator sport, so better still get them to come and sing!

The venue is Hillhead Baptist Church, Cresswell St, Glasgow G12 8AE. The day runs from 10am to 5pm, and will set you back only £10 (£5 students/unemployed), to include refreshments and a potluck midday meal. If you can, please bring something to eat for a traditional "bring and share" lunch in the time-honoured way. If you’re new to this kind of music and you’d like to get some idea of what it sounds (and looks) like, you can hear some live recordings from a previous singing on our myspace site at http://www.myspace.com/shapenotescotland. There's also some video (click on the link under the main picture). Those who prefer higher production values may like to watch the trailer of the documentary film Awake, My Soul: The Story of the Sacred Harp at http://snipurl.com/awakemysoul.
