“Much of my creative life has been spent outdoors, performing personal ceremonies and parties, at festivals and public places, creating a band and theatre that draws on street musics and the history of outdoor ritual and celebration, where, again, the sacred and profane engender and become indistinguishable. My other musical head plays and researches early English woodwinds, and I discovered a vernacular and in part improvised tradition of music for both church and dancing in the village bands of the eighteenth and nineteenth century. “

Tim Hill has been involved in street band, improvisation, folk music, cooking and creating outdoor events for over ten years. Recent experience ranges from playing, researching and making English village band music with the Mellstock Band, running the Pandaemonium Street Band and his current band Tongues of Fire, working on the Ulverston Lantern Finale and street band and performance projects with Welfare State International and running street band workshops for Traditional Arts Projects, Folkworks, Hands on Music and the Sidmouth Festival.

He composes new music for winds, brass and percussion, is currently working on a street band and processional project with funding from the Arts Council England, and has helped recreate outdoor band sounds for TV and film productions like ‘Return of the Native’, ‘Far from the Madding Crowd’ and ‘Tess of the D'Urbevilles’.

In 2005 he was Artist in Residence for Welfare State International at Lanternhouse in Cumbria, working on new songs for modern celebrations, a solo environmental sound and giant wind instrument project and with local bands and young people on a processional performance.

Other current work includes Leviathon Whispers duo with digital sound artist Jonathan Coleclough, a trio with Steve Noble and John Edwards, the Albion Horns, a West Country based circus/barndance band and Soundings.

B&S003 Soundings – solo saxophone and drones
Soundings is a piece built from fragments of improvisations, scraps and scrapes of song and sounds - a meditation inspired by landscape and seascape, of the landscapes of sound, the body and the imagination, as coastline and sky; by the sight and sound of the Glaxo factory’s giant horns steaming and humming to the night. The piece lives on the edge of melody, rhythm, harmony, sound and texture, a sprawling aural mudflat picked over by a solitary musician. Part of my Artist in Residency with WSI.
