Outline
This line was built as the Midland Railway's route into Manchester. Leaving the St.Pancras to Sheffield main line at Ambergate, it initially ran to Rowsley, opening in 1846. A later extension completed in 1867 saw it through to Manchester. The line to Buxton is essentially a branch, leaving the main line at Millers Dale.
