J94 STEAM RIDE PREPARATION 2004

Filling the tank
After an early rise to light the fire at 4-00am, first start by filling the saddle tank from the hose.

Oiling Up
Fill the oil cans taken from the stores. There are two sorts of oil; a thinner oil for the motion, and a thicker "steam oil" for the cylinders, heated automatically by steam bled from the boiler.

Oiling the motion
There are about 50 oiling points in total; something to do while the steam pressure rises !
The motion also needs cleaning with paraffin to remove the previous day's grime, which will destroy the bearings if allowed to ingress.

Underneath
All the cylinders and valve gear on the "J94" are between the frames, with access either by squeezing under the boiler from the running plate, or from the pit underneath.

Check the fire
A nice even fire is required, no holes to let in cold air, and no thick spots that generate unpopular black smoke and waste coal.

Ready to go
After about 5 hours toil, all the preparation is now done, and working steam pressure raised.
Single lamp set for running light engine out of the yard.

Leaving the yard
Opening the regulator to drive off the yard.
