Board-games

Heaven on Earth specialises in unusual board-games, in addition to the traditional favourites, such as chess and backgammon. We also stock a range of books on some of the games below.

Handmade, Reclaimed Timber Board-games
TABULA the game of the Roman Emperors c.1st & 2nd centuries AD for 2 players. A forerunner of modern backgammon. Interesting in that both players move round the board in the same direction and 3 die are used.

FANORONA a game from Madagascar of the 18th century for 2 players, developed from the ancient Moorish game of Alquerque. One of the disciplines of The Times 'Olympiad of the Mind' and used by Madagascans for divinatory purposes.

SHOGI Japanese Chess for 2 players - a variation on the western game where captured opponents' pieces can be parachuted into the captor's side to add to his army.

SIANG KI Chinese Chess for 2 players. Another variation on the western game. The board is divided in the middle by a river (the Yangtse) and the king is restricted to his citadel.

RIZIGO an Austrian apres-ski game of 'Risk' for 2 or more players. Best played when slightly inebriated and loud.

BIZINGO a North American game of the 19th century for 2 players. A variation on draughts with custodian capture and captains of increased power.

NYOUT Korean game, at least two thousand years old for 2,3 or 4 players. One of the earliest of the cross and circle race games.

AD ELTER STELPER (also known as Chasing the Girls) an Icelandic form of backgammon where only certain throws of the die count and players chase each other round the board.

WEI CH'I (GO) Chinese/Japanese Game of territorial possession. One of the oldest games for 2 players.

TAWLBRDD Ancient Welsh game of the Tafl group.
