Ancestors of Helen Jane KENT

Sixth Generation

32. Henry Benjamin KENT

[Parents]

was born Jan 1825 in Gillingham, Kent and was christened 13 Feb 1825 in St Marys, Gillingham, Kent.  He was working as a dockyard labourer and living in Gillingham Lane in 1871 and 1881 by 1891 had become a bootmaker.  At the time of the 1871 Census he had Sarah's daughter by her first marriage living with him - Eliza Sweetman (wife of a sailor) and her 3 month old son George, as well as his two sons Henry and William.  At the time of the 1891 Census, Henry and Sarah had their son William and his family living with them (his wife Amy and their two sons).  Henry Benjamin died 7 Apr 1891 while living at 4 High Street, Gillingham, Kent and was buried 12 Apr 1891 in Grange Road Cemetery, Gillingham, Kent.
33. Sarah GROVES was born in the Wainscott/Frindsbury area in around 1823.  We assume she married John Wanstall, as she had at least six children by him between 1840 and 1850 before he died.  She then had two children with Henry Benjamin Kent in the early 1860s but we can find no marriage certificate for them.  Did she marry someone else between 1850 and 1860 and therefore have a different surname?  At the time of the 1871 Census she was not at home with Henry and their children - it seems she was working as a General Servant for the Vicar of Gillingham - Robert J.Molesworth and his family at the Vicarage, Gillingham Green.  She died on 31 May 1900 in Gillingham, Kent and was buried 5 Jun 1900 in Grange Road Cemetery, Gillingham, Kent.

44. John COURTNEY

was born 12 Jun 1803 in Castlebellingham, Co.Louth, Ireland. He worked as a weaver before he joined the East India Company in 1827. He served with the Bengal Artillery and then transferred to the Town Majors List becoming a Subconductor in 1851. He married Susan and they had two children. He died on 12th August 1888 at Chunar, India.  (A detailed account of his life was written by his son - see Michael Courtney's Personal Family History).

49. Mary Anne DURRANT

50. Frederick FREEMAN My Great Great Great Grandfather worked as an Engineman in 1876.
51. Sarah ?

56. Charles HOLLINGSWORTH was born in about 1814, possibly in Hertfordshire.  He worked as a Blacksmith for most of his life and married Sarah Clapham on 24th October 1858 at the Parish Church, St.Jude, Bethnal Green.  He is shown as a widower aged 44 and so may have already had children.  The IGI shows a Charles Hollingsworth christened 1/5/1814 at Hertingfordbury, Hertford with parents Joseph and Elizabeth but this is unconfirmed. The 1861 Census shows Charles and Sarah in Shoreditch with 4 children, 3 of whom may have been from Charles'' first marriage ie. born before 1858.   By 1871 they were living in Hackney with three more children, and are shown incorrectly on the 1881 census with the surname Hollingwood, living in Shoreditch.   In 1891 Charles and Sarah are shown in Shoreditch aged 77 and 63 respectively with their unmarried son Charles aged 23, also a Blacksmith.
57. Sarah CLAPHAM was born in about 1826, possibly in Hertfordshire.  She is shown as a spinster at the time of her marriage to Charles in 1858.  The IGI shows a Sarah Clapham christened 29/7/1827 at Cheshunt, Hertford with parents Thomas and Lucy, but this is unconfirmed.

58.Alexander SIMONS My Great Great Great Grandfather was born in about 1846 in St.Luke’s, Middlesex. He married Elizabeth and they had at least six children. He worked as a Printer and then from 1881 onwards he is shown as a Window Blind Maker.  On both the 1871 and 1881 Censuses Alexander and Elizabeth were living at 24 James Street, Shoreditch, then on the 1891 and 1901 Censuses they were living at 64 Taplow Street, Shoreditch.  I have also found an Alexander working as a Printer on the 1861 census which looks promising but has yet to be confirmed.  This would tie in with an IGI entry for Alexander Simons christened 26/4/1846 at St.Thomas Charterhouse with parents John and Elizabeth, but again this is unconfirmed.  I also have a birth certificate for an Alexander Simons born 13 Oct 1844 in St.Luke's to John and Elizabeth but I can't be 100% sure this is him although it does look likely.  If it is then his mother's maiden name was Elizabeth Hassell and his father John was a Brush Maker.
59. Elizabeth HARDCASTLE? was born in about 1846 in the City of London, possibly Cripplegate.  There is a good chance her maiden name was Hardcastle, but I could do with more evidence to support this.

60. William Henry CALLAWAY

[Parents]

My Great Great Great Grandfather was born in 1838 in Portsmouth and christened on 14th October 1838 at St.Mary's, Portsea. He married Harriet Maria Standing on Christmas Day 1863 at the Parish Church, Portsmouth and they had at least eight children. At this time he was working as a labourer and living in East Street. By 1879 he was a skilled labourer living in Stamshaw Lane, Portsea. He was noted as a pensioner at the time of Leonard’s marriage in 1905.

61. Harriet Maria STANDING

was born in about 1847 in Portsmouth.  She was buried on 2nd May 1921.

62. John Henry MEARS

[Parents]

My Great Great Great Grandfather was born on 7th June 1851 in Chalton Street, Portsea. It is likely that he was christened on 20th May 1855 at St Mary’s Church in Portsea. He joined the Royal Navy as a Stoker and married Barbara Lloyd on 11th September 1879 at the Parish Church, Portsmouth. At the time of their marriage he was serving aboard HMS Asia, and three years later he served on HMS Inflexible.  They had at least five children.

63. Barbara LLOYD
