SEXplained... Funky Dam
Oral Pro-Tekta(TM)

Coming soon................ we hope...... red tape dependent!

What is it?

  • The SEXplained...® Funky Dam is a polyurethane barrier for external protection during oral sex.
  • It’s the barrier protector to bring down barriers to good communication, enhance sexual protection and encourage sophisticated sensuality.

Why should I use it?

  • You should use it to reduce your risk of catching a sexually transmitted infection in your mouth.
  • See images of oral sexually transmitted infection if you doubt the risks. This page takes over 60 seconds to load.

How should I use it?

  • Place it over the area you intend to stimulate (lick) before oral contact starts – ie labia, clitoris, or anus, and then lick through it.

Is the SEXplained... ® Funky Dam just for going down on a woman (cunnilingus or anilingus)?

  • No, it is not.

What if my partner is a man?

  • When giving oral sexual stimulation to a man, use a flavoured condom over his penis and a SEXplained... ® Funky Dam over his anus if you want to practice anilingus (anal licking / rimming / anilingus) as a form of arousal/foreplay more safely. (It should also be used if practicing anilingus with a woman.)
  • This is particularly important if you know you have oral herpes since virus particles may shed asymptomatically (without you knowing) to an uninfected person (male or female). Herpes can also pass asymptomatically from someone who is a carrier, unaware that they have the herpes virus on board.

Which infections can be passed during unprotected oral sex?

  • NSU, syphilis, gonorrhoea, herpes, warts, HIV and hepatitis to name but a few, can be passed orally if they are present – as can general sore throat germs pass to the genital area and then cause discomfort. Bacterial Vaginosis and thrush are also thought to be associated with oral sex although they can occur for other reasons, and are not just sexually transmitted. See Images of Oral Sexually Transmitted Infections.

How do I use it?

  • You place it over the area you intend to stimulate orally, before any oral genital contact starts, ensuring you have it ‘this way up’.
  • The moisture produced during sexual stimulation helps keep it in place.
  • As body heat warms it, it feels softer.
  • It must be placed ‘this way up’ so that should it fall off during use, you can replace it in the right way up.

Will it help me prevent oral sexual transmission of infection?

  • It should help you enhance your safety if used consistently and correctly at all times.

Should I put it over my partner’s penis before I go down on him (fellatio/blow job/head)?

  • No, you should use a flavoured condom over a penis before oral sexual stimulation.
  • If however you do not have a flavoured condom handy, you could use a SEXplained... Funky Dam over his penis, carefully…….. but it is NOT designed for internal/penetrative use at all.

How did the SEXplained... ® Funky Dam come about?

  • Dental dams have been on the market for many years now, but the SEXplained... ® Funky Dam came about following in depth discussions with women wanting the risks of unprotected oral sex to be highlighted to a wider audience and discussion about the various materials available. They also wished for a different material to latex.

What are the advantages of using a SEXplained... ® Funky Dam?

  • It is made of high quality, well-known and tested polyurethane.
  • Unlike latex dental dams, it has no smell or taste.
  • Being ‘see through’ you can see where you’ll be licking.
  • Its ‘this way up’ indicator means that should it fall off, it can easily be replaced the right way round.
  • Any lubricant can be used with it.
  • No risk of latex allergy.
  • When first using it you can enhance your safer sexual repertoire, prolong foreplay techniques and enhance laughter, giggles and communication skills between partners. (Always an advantage when trying to discuss safer sex techniques!)
  • It can be an amazing turn on to find a partner who cares enough about sexual health to think of protecting you both and of tomorrow, not just today!
  • Safer sex can mean more sex – not less, if you stop and think about it carefully.

What are the disadvantages of using a SEXplained... ® Funky Dam?

  • Apart from the obvious fact that you won’t be able to taste your partner’s juices as they ‘flow’ or experience oral ‘flesh to flesh’ sensations, when used correctly, there are only advantages to your health – without which, you might not feel like having sex anyway!
  • It’s not nice to think that someone you find attractive could have an infection on board that you could catch. Thinking so clinically about potential risk can be a bit of a turn off initially, but that can be turned to an advantage. Life is too precious to not ‘think twice’ and have sex safely. What’s the point of exchanging body fluids with someone you can’t even talk to?

Are orally sexually transmitted infections common?

  • Yes they are, though not as common as vaginal or anally transmitted infections.

What if it falls of while I’m using it?

  • Check for the ‘this way down’ label and replace it as it was before it fell off, or use a new one.

How can I enhance sensitivity for my partner when I use this?

  • You can enhance sensitivity by adding some water-based lubricant to their genital area before putting the SEXplained... ® Funky Dam in place.

Can I use with massage oils rather than water based or silicone lubricants?

  • Yes, you can use massage oils rather than water based or silicone lubricants with the SEXplained... ® Funky Dam.
  • However, if you are going to be having penetrative sex later, with a latex condom, do NOT use an oil-based substance. Oil interacts with latex and will rot/burst/split the condom.
  • Any oil (including bath oil) should be washed off the genital area with soap and water, and then the area dried thoroughly before a latex condom is used.
  • Furthermore, lipstick should be washed off, and even saliva should be dried from a penis shaft thoroughly, before a latex condom is put on; otherwise, it is more likely to slip off during penetrative sex.

It’s not very sexy, is it?

  • It may not appear to be sexy but catching or passing a sexually transmitted infection is certainly not sexy!

Can I use it more than once?

  • At present, we must recommend single use only.

The SEXplained... ® Funky Dam may only enhance protection against sexually transmitted infection as part of your safer sexual practice. No guarantee is given that it WILL protect you totally.

It is entirely user dependant.
