tracklisting

A1: Me And You

Sampling John Lee Hooker, this reeks of ol' skool breakbeat house - but there’s not a 4/4 kick in sight! Shit Kickers edit by Carim Clasmann. Previously unobtainable due to UK foot and mouth restrictions, this livestock has now been certified "safe"; and is ready to spread it's filth all over dancefloors everywhere! Watch your step!

A2: Untrue (Here Boy mix)

Here Boy mix in a "f*ck skool" stylee. Is this really post-millennial breakbeat juxtaposited between 2-Step and Electro? Who cares! Hyperactive beats and remedial synths usually mean only one thing – it demands attention! Despite counselling, this will beat up your teacher when the bassline hits you!

AA1: Medicine

"You are the pill for my fever and chill!" By strict definition, this should be downtempo Drum n Bass, but there's nothing like this! This is the classic Sugardog 'good dog/bad dog' scenario taking you on a journey from beauty to disease, through a parallel biological dimension. A strange but sensual illness. Unpredictable. Terminal. No cure.

AA2: Untrue

The original Sugardog/Carim Clasmann mix, this just ejaculates from the speaker and washes you with bass. Gila sings "Is this untrue?" and you want to shake her, yelling "True! True!" If it really exists, this is 'Stadium Jungle' - destined for massive sound systems in massive spaces. Massive.

info

Following on from the last record's 160 bpm pulse rate this double A-sided stimulant will give you palpitations and make you sweat… But, true to form, Sugardog refuse to be classified and break the beat down into a slower, funkier 140 bpm for the A side - starting with "Me And You" featuring John Lee Hooker - "an old mate" Sugardog claim, and finishing with Here Boy’s electronic 2-Step mix of Sugardog’s way underground classic - "Untrue". The flip AA side then whips you back up to speed, first subduing you through hypnosis on "Medicine" and then brutalising you with broken breakbeats on the original D n B mix of "Untrue".

Title:        Sugardog - Little Devils
Released:     February 14 2001
Distribution: Cargo/LAZY (uk) Lasgo (export)
Available:    yes

tracklisting

A1 is the haunting Little Devils. Gila's evocative vocal, mysteriously underpinned by a mesmerising Drum n Bass/Breakbeat backing. If Greta Garbo was a breakbeat record producer, she would have made this choon!

B1 is Radio. Alien Breakbeat/Jungle, forensically re-constructed with sounds broadcast from space, this music goes beyond normal human reckoning. Only for the higher intelligence…

B2 is the beautiful Coolin'. Smokin' vox from Gila with a syncopated lateral groove. Truly a unique sound, this is destined to be a chill-out rizla classic!

The response for LAZY1 was great with a wicked review at the massive DotMusic site where they awarded Sugardog 5/5! There is an audiofile of "Little Devils" available for streaming/download - so you can check it out. Read the review here. There was also a review in January's "DJ" mag (under the 'Beats' section).

Andrew Weatherall (2 Lone Swordsmen, Rotters Golf Club) has been playing "Little Devils" and "Coolin" regularly. We had plays on Andy (Groove Armada) Cato's show on Kiss FM; Christopher Bibby (NY Sushi) is playing "Little Devils" (it's in his top 10, just one place below Photek!) and various internet radio stations have been playing the tunes: AmmoCity, Steffen Schmidt and Johannes Paetzold on Berlin's Multikulti, Clive Craske on CableRadio.
