GYMNASTICS COURSES FOR TEACHERS
Introduction

British Gymnastics, in conjunction with British Schools Gymnastics Association, has developed a new range of courses for Teachers. These courses are to replace the Teachers’ Extra Curricular Award and the TOP-up module, but do far more than this.

We recognise that Teachers need a lot of technical knowledge and support when teaching gymnastics in both curricular and extra curricular situations. These courses seek to give them that knowledge and support in an interesting, practical and easily accessible way. These courses fit alongside the TOP Gymnastics and the new CPD modules to provide a comprehensive gymnastics package.

At the upper two levels, the courses are parallel to the new British Gymnastics Cycle 6 General Gymnastics Assistant Coach and Coach Awards, which will make up the new UKCC level 1 and 2. This will provide Teachers with a chance to enter the sport’s coaching structure at a higher level. All the courses fit within the new British Gymnastics Fundamental Movement Ideas.

We recognise that teachers are currently able to run an extra curricular club without completing a course, but in this era of litigation and minimum safety standards, they recognise the sense of gaining knowledge and qualification. While doing the courses, teachers will find that the technical content will be just as useful to support their teaching, whichever scheme of work their school is using.

These courses, being modular in nature, are easier to access, as they can be run as two full days, separate days, or twilight sessions. As each module is separately accredited, teachers can gain the full award at their own pace. Each module adds to a teacher’s knowledge and confidence with the progressions and skills involved in gymnastics.

The teachers can choose which course they think is most relevant for them. For example a newly qualified Primary school teacher with little input through initial teacher training wanting to start a gym club may well benefit from working through the Introduction Level modules. A teacher wishing to develop their extra curricular club may well choose an Intermediate Level course, while a trained PE specialist may want to enter at Advanced Level. Each module completed will be accredited by British Gymnastics. If six modules are completed the full award of that Level will be made. These awards are also available to Teaching Assistants working within the school, with certain extra criteria.
