Dates & Prices

When winter comes around most walkers retreat down to the lowlands because of the high cost of additional equipment and lack of experience and training. By doing so they miss some of the most memorable days to be had high in the British hills. High Trek have designed a flexible winter package which provides all specialist equipment and combines training in necessary winter skills with a light-hearted holiday at our base in Snowdonia's high mountains. After dinner on your first evening, we'll give you a little talk on types and uses of equipment and you can adjust your crampons to fit your boots.

Quality Instruction Every day our mini bus will take you and your qualified leader to your walk (if you're not walking from the door). He'll give you tuition in the use of crampons and ice axes, finding safe slopes to practice self arrest and show you how to ascend and descend snow slopes safely. He'll teach you about avalanche awareness and you can have fun learning how to build snow holes and shelters and practising the techniques of navigation when all but the contours are blurred by snow.

Fresh Air & Freedom We never forget that it's your holiday and there'll be time to take photos, enjoy the spectacular views or simply relish the clean air and freedom of the mountains. Of course we can't guarantee snow, but we can promise three days of fabulous walking and there's usually more than enough snow around for winter techniques' practice. We're never short of suggestions for a good day in the mountains and, whatever the weather conditions, we'll have plenty of choices to offer you from classic ridges to our own favourite scrambles.

Equipment You'll only need to bring warm clothes and a pair of strong walking boots. We provide jackets and overtrousers, rucksacks, maps, compass, gaiters, ice axe, crampons, helmet, torch - even mitts and hat - all in the cost of your holiday. Very bendy walking boots are not suitable for holding crampons - if this is the case with yours be prepared to hire some.

Fitness & Experience For maximum enjoyment of this holiday we recommend that guests have some experience of walking in the British hills, a fair head for heights and, since winter mountain walking is a fairly strenuous activity, a reasonable level of fitness.
Private Guiding & Instruction These can be easily arranged for both winter walking and snow & ice climbing especially mid-week when we charge £100 for one person per day. Reductions (per person) for more than one and full board costs £30 per person, per night. Just ask!
