Basic Chicken Keeping Courses

Hillcroft Kitchen Gardens runs courses every year aimed specifically at those who wish to improve their knowledge of chicken keeping. This is our fifth year of holding the courses, and over the years we have had a variety of people attend from absolute beginners who have never picked a hen up in their lives to people who are already keeping a few hens but wish to extend their knowledge. We have also met some people who have had bad experiences with hen-keeping and wish to know what went wrong. Our aim is to make chicken keeping as easy and enjoyable as possible and we hope some of our enthusiasm will rub off on you. With the right housing and equipment, it can take as little as ten minutes a day to provide your household with a supply of the freshest, tastiest eggs you will ever eat.

We plan to hold one-day courses from March to September 2005 - (please see attached programme dates) to provide an overall introduction on how to keep chickens in a variety of ways suitable for the smallest garden to a sizeable plot. The group will be fairly small and the atmosphere friendly and informal. At any one time we usually have over 150 chickens here at Hillcroft, including 12 different pure breeds (used for breeding) and some cross-breeds and hybrids, which we use for egg production. Over 20 cocks and cockerels ensure that we do not oversleep. The breeding season is at the peak in spring but we extend the season so that participants on the course can see how it is done and see the chicks and young stock at various ages.
