Exile 2

Rescuing Vvynas-Bok

Starting off on the quest and advice

Once you have get Royal Clearance, see King Micah in the Castle, and he will give you some information, the quest to kill Garzahd, and tell you some people you should see to help you. He will suggest, amongst others, seeing Erika Redmark. She is in her Tower in the Empire Lands, and has information on the third Crystal Soul and Garzahd.

To complete this quest, you will need Quickfire. In order for Rentar-Ihrno to teach you this, you need to fetch her the Mica Tome as payment. This quest was issued in Chapter 3 - Testing, but you can do it at any point in Chapter 3 and 4, as long as you learn the spell and have 50 SP to cast it with, by the time you teleport to Akhronath. Quickfire walkthrough now available.

Finding out where the Crystal Soul is

Visiting Erika

You need to see Erika to obtain information and her help. You can only get there by teleporter, using the code from the isolated pylon in the Chapter 1 part of the map, or by asking the teleportation researcher in the Castle. It is Kav Ait Bon. The first few times you go to Erika's tower, you have to visit her in a toruous manner, as described below.

Getting into Erika's Tower, and getting to her chambers
  1. Enter 'Kav Ait Bon' into the teleporter.
  2. Walk North to enter 'town'. Erika's tower is surrounded by hostile troops, but the ones in the lobby are charmed. Enter combat mode and bless andhaste your party, and fight a funning battle to reach the entrance doors to the north. Fight any remaining troops round the doorway. End combat mode, and step into the lobby. Ignore the troops - they are charmed. WARNING: If you enter the lobby in combat mode, you will be attacked, including by Erika.
  3. Walk West.
  4. Pull the lever in the middle of the outer ring floor, to open the 1st portcullis.
  5. When you reach the next lever, pull it, and then walk as follows, from the lever square: E E E NE SE E SE NE E SE E E, and so through the door.
  6. Walk on, and you will find some walls in the corridor. Walk diagonally between them, so as to avoid the bolts of lightning. Fight the hostile guardians and basilisks, round each corner as you go.
  7. You arrive in the second ring. In the area with the pillars, look for a secret door at x37 y50 and pull the lever there. This turns off the ice walls. Demons and blade walls appear as you move. Fight them.
  8. Keep walking along and you will find yourself in an area of barriers and runes. Break the barrier that runs across the corridor.
  9. You arrive at portcullis puzzle. Walk straight towards the portcullis, in line with the portcullis, and it will resolve so you can walk through it.
  10. Walk on and you come to an area guarded by statues, who will only let you pass if you answer their riddles. You only need to answer two of them to get past.
  11. The answers to the northern pair of riddles are (left to right) 'crown' and 'grave'. The answers to the southern pair are '13' and '3828231684211'. If you want a fuller description, see the page on Erika's riddles.
  12. Walk on. You will wander into an area full of guardians, rakshasas and black shades. Fight them. If you feel brave, you could try resting here, once they are dead.
  13. Enter the room ahead, through the one-square wide gangway. The lights will go out as you do so. If you are unlucky, there will still be some monsters in here, who didn't venture out to tackle you before.
  14. From this room, head West, and you will enter a swamp area of shamblers. Fight them. When you get to the end of the area by the single square gap in the wall, the lights will go back on.
  15. Walk round and you will find yourself at the doors of Erika's rooms. End combat mode.
  16. Once out of combat mode, enter Erika's rooms.

Talking to Erika the first time round...

Enter Erika's rooms and ask 'name', 'job', 'assaults', 'crystal soul'. While you are here, if you want to be tidy-minded, you could also ask about 'Garzahd' for later on.

Erika tells you that she doesn't know where the Crystal Soul is, but that the dragon Athron, who lives west of Mertis, may do. She says that if you go to see him, mention 'Redmark', as he may then let you in. When you learn what he has to say, return to see Erika and tell her what you learned.

If you have not been here before, walk South and search her library for useful information.

In her library you may find: Wall of Blades, perhaps Major Summoning (not sure I trust my notes on this, and I get variable results when loading up an old game, and information in one of her journals stating that someone at Patrick's Tower has a Ring of Will and that this is worth asking about as it is very helpful in mindduel.

When you have finished quizzing Erika, enter the room to the East and enter the teleporter there. It will return you to the Tower of Magi.

Going to see Athron
  1. If necessary, train, and then recover at Tower of Magi.
  2. Go to Mertis, then head West into the Honeycomb.
  3. Head roughly NW - Athron's lair is near the river bank.
  4. Athron's lair is guarded by two statues. Go past these and you will be attacked by gazers and eyebeasts. Fight these. Rest.
  5. Enter the lair through the door to the north. Once just inside, walk immediately to the right, through a secret door in the cave wall. Walk roughly N and enter the teleporter.
  6. You are teleported into a portal chamber. Enter the teleporter here. As you do so, you will be greeted by a displeased Athron who will ask 'who sent you?'. Answer 'Redmark'.
  7. Athron is annoyed and teleports you into the Hall of Portculli.
  8. In the Hall of Portculli, there are four runes and a corridor with four portculli that are all shut. You have to step on the runes until all four portculli are open. This is a case of trial and error. If you were to number the runes left to right 1 to 4, I did something along these lines: 1, 4, 3, 2, 1 , 4, 1, 2, 3, 2, 4, 1, 3, 2, 1.
  9. Once the portculli are open, walk through the corridor and get into the teleporter you see there.
  10. You will be teleported to the original entrance cave, so you need to go back in through the secret door to the right, head N, into the teleporter, and then on arrival in the portal chamber, get into the teleporter. Again, Athron will ask 'who sent you?'. Answer 'Redmark'.
  11. Athron is annoyed and teleports you into a temple.
  12. Walk forwards. As you do so, the walls will come down and reveal giants, gazers, a basilisk, and various other monsters. Fight these. Once these are dead, you can step back to where you appeared and step one square back, through a secret door and pick up a flail if you like. You can also long wait to get some health and spell points back if you want. When you are ready, head for the NW corner and step into the teleporter there.
  13. You will be teleported to the original entrance cave, so you need to go back in through the secret door to the right, head N, into the teleporter, and then on arrival in the portal chamber, get into the teleporter. Again, Athron will ask 'who sent you?'. Answer 'Redmark'.
  14. Athron is really annoyed and teleports you into a Hydra Hall.
  15. Here there are about four sets of fire hydras, each surrounded by lava. There are opportunities in here to long wait out of the range of the fire hydras, as needed. Fight the fire hydras with a combination of ice bolts, arrows, casting firewalk and having your short-range fighters attack and so on. There is a reasonable amount of treasure to gain in the process.
  16. When you have finished fighting the hydras, walk to the teleporter, and enter it.
  17. You will be teleported to the original entrance cave, so you need to go back in through the secret door to the right, head N, into the teleporter, and then on arrival in the portal chamber, get into the teleporter. Again, Athron will ask 'who sent you?'. Answer 'Redmark'.
  18. This time Athron is resigned and lets you in to see him, but on pain of death if you disturb his Inner Sanctum.
  19. Enter the chamber and talk to Athron. Ask 'job' (looking after his brood), and 'crystal soul', 'hiding place', 'Akhronath'. Also if you feel inclined 'Vahnatai'.
  20. Athron tells you that whilst he was spirit travelling, he found a spirit in distress but could not get close to it. He recognised it has been stolen from the Vahnatai and was being hidden in Akhronath. If you asked 'Vahnatai' you get a pointed remark: 'A dignified and wise people who know how to respect a being's privacy.'.
  21. When you have finished talking to Athron, walk back to the portal and you will be returned to the entrance cave. (The Inner Sanctum is to the West in Athron's cave but I wouldn't recommed disturbing it).
  22. Go outside and walk back to the Tower of Magi.

Finding out how to get to the location of the Crystal Soul

Going to see Erika a second time
  1. Teleport to Erika's Tower.
  2. Enter as before in this walkthrough, rather than the teleporter by her front door. (I am not sure when you are allowed to use the teleporter).
  3. Tell Erika 'Akhronath' and she says 'Akhronath! Of course!'.
  4. If you ask her about it again, she will tell you it is a fortress containing powerful magical creatures who do research, such as into magical barriers. If you ask 'wards', she also says that the fort entry is blocked by two statues but that a mage called Ostoth knows how to reach it.
  5. Ask 'Ostoth' and she will tell you that he said he knew the code, and to ask him 'Akhronath'.
  6. When you have finished talking, enter the room to the East, and enter the teleporter to return to the Tower of Magi.

Visiting Ostoth
  1. Make your way to Cave of Motrax, in the tunnels N of Formello, in the chapter 1 part of the map.
  2. Enter Cave of Motrax, and walk into Motrax's audience area, and then walk W to a locked door.
  3. Cast 'unlock' on the door, and enter. You need Magi Clearance to pass this point.
  4. Explore these rooms, but head to the S end of this complex. Near the labs, in the vicinty of x10 y10 you will find Ostoth.
  5. Ask Ostoth 'name', to check you've found him, and then 'Akhronath'.
  6. Ostoth says he found the teleporter code before he came here, and that it is in his quarters at the Tower of Magi. He also says that the key is in a secret room of his quarters here, in Cave of Motrax. He says you can have it, and that 'If you're going to Akhronath you need lots of help.'
  7. Search to the S of Ostoth for the bedrooms. Search the rooms until you find one with a secret door in the wall. Walk into the secret room, and take the Feldspar key you find there.
  8. Make your way S to the Tower of Magi.
  9. Look for Ostoth's bedroom - it's one room down and 1 room across from your party's room, and the door is at x41 y38. Open the door. Once inside, use the key to unlock the second door.
  10. Read the pedestal.
  11. You learn the code is 'Owa Tah Ful'.

Going to Akhronath and rescuing Vvynas-Bok

Getting to Akhronath
  1. Do some training, and stock up on healing and energy potions. Make sure you have 150-200 HP for your party, and enough spell points for you mage to cast quickfire.
  2. Enter the code 'Owa Tah Ful' into the teleporter in the Tower of Magi.
  3. You will arrive just outside Akhronath. Walk E and enter the fort.
  4. As soon as you enter, you will be plunged into the battle pit.

Akhronath: The Battle Pit
  1. Enter combat mode, bless and haste your party, and fight: hydras and ice hydras; quickghasts; eyebeasts and gazers; golems; mutant giants.
  2. Once everything is dead, head S to the now open portcullis.
  3. Once you enter the portcullis, you will be teleported to Angierach prison, and hear your fate being discussed by Midori the lich and the other creatures. You learn you will be stripped of your skills.

Akhronath: Angierach Prison
  1. You are now in Angierach Prison, which is still part of Akhronath. You need to escape, so search the pillars in the cell.
  2. The pillar at the N wall has a button. Press it.
  3. Go N through the secret door at x10 y52. you hear a voice saying don't all come in, otherwise the golems will notice, so one of you must go through.
  4. Send in one person, preferably your strongest fighter.
  5. Talk to the ghost Quinby: 'name', 'job', 'mage'; 'job', 'Akhronath', 'escape', 'doors', 'avenged', 'twelve', 'prisoners'.
  6. Quinby tells you he was a mage of some reknown, brought to Akhronath and questioned by the twelve evil creatures who live in the fort. He could have unlocked his cell door, but could not escape because the golems would defeat him. He tells you that there is a lever someone outside the cells that will open the doors. He discovered this after his death. He wants his death and those of others to be avenged by the death of the twelve. The twelve are evil creatures who perform cruel acts and magic on others to help the Empire. You learn people are either experimented on, or their minds are drained, and then they are left to starve to death.
  7. Return to your cell, and enter combat mode. Try to kill some of the golems through the window, or at least damage them a bit.
  8. Return to Quinby's cell. Pick the lock on Quinby's door and go through it. Go through the damage barrier. Pick the lock on the further door. Enter the room, and kill the golems.
  9. Move to the SE corner, and pull the lever at x22 y61. Have the rest of your party escape the cell and join you.

Akhronath: Rescuing Vvynas-Bok
  1. Head N and go through the other door. Take the secret door in this passage at x20 y44.
  2. For future information, the corridor to Vvynas's prison is on the right hand side, but you need a key to get in.
  3. Go up the corridor and follow it round. You will hear the creatures trying to unnerve you. Continue heading E.
  4. To the S, once past the rakshasas area, you should find a library. The second bookshelf on the right contains Ravage Spirit. Once you have learnt it, return to the main corridor.
  5. Go back to the corridor, and continue E into the Council Hall. Fight any hostile creatures here.
  6. Walk S into a room of spirits and devas. Fight them. As you fight, some golems and a lich will appear at the S end. Concentrate on killing the lich. When they are all dead, walk S.
  7. Walk over the throne and beyond the secret door at x58 y58, and trigger the special. You will find an iron key in the shape of a lich. Take it.
  8. Head N back into the Council Chamber, then head W back to the corridor that offers you the junction to go to Vvynas's prison. Go down the passage towards the prison, and then S. Unlock the door with the key.
  9. Guardians, black shades and golems guard this chamber. Fight these, and position yourselves against the S wall of the dome.
  10. Once the fighting is over, LW or take energy potions to get some spell points back, and health.
  11. Cast 'quickfire' on the S wall of the dome/red barrier, and run N. As you run, trigger the special in the breached dome, and take the Crystal Soul. Keep running N.
  12. Exit the room, and keep running until you get to the main corridor. The quickfire will be contained now. Head N and then take the 2nd left on the main corridor.
  13. Fight any monsters that appear, and continue W. On your way out, press the button in the entrance.
  14. Once outside, look for a secret door in the cave wall to the S (near the statues), and enter it. You can rest now.
  15. Continue S and clamber down the slope at the special, and then walk and fly your way back to Fort Remote.
  16. Walk to the Tower of Magi, and rest.

Returning the Crystal Soul

  1. Teleport to the Vahnatai lands, and place the Crystal Soul in the Shrine of Crystals.
  2. Talk to the Crystal Souls if you wish.
  3. If you talk to Vvynas-Bok you will learn that Vvynas is preparing for battle against the Empire. You learn he will soon fight, and will be carried into battle to do so.
  4. Return to Olgai, and talk to the Council and collect your reward (boots of speed, or crystal shield). The Vahnatai are pleased that Vvynas did not have to dissolve himself in order to prevent the possibility that he might aid the Empire.
  5. If this is the last Crystal Soul to return, you will get extra praise from the Vahnatai. They are pleased things have worked out, and their magic is now directed at the Empire, and the Vahnatai will help Exiles when they fight the Empire. You have now completed a victory condition.
  6. Step in the teleporter and return to the Tower of Magi to plan your next move.

Extra things you could do

If you wish, return to Akhronath to explore and clear the place. There are several things here: the S part of the fort is occupied by rakshasas; N of the Council Chamber is a maze and some wizard quarters; in the E part of the fort, there are caves of snakes, nagas, drakes etc; the N part of the fort has some contained hostile creatures and some efreets. The wizard quarters has a secret door at x30 y16 which leads to a bookcase where you can learn 'Death Arrows'. Through a secret door in a pillar hall E of the efreet chambers, there is a hall with barriers shielding cells. From N to S, the W side contains: fire lizard; salamander; wand. From N to S on the E side, they contain: spectre; 250g; demon. In the Efreet Chambers is a ring and some poison on the table. From the Efreet Chamber is some lava heading W. Firewalk along it, and you will come to a special. Trigger it and take the ruby - it is in fact a Shielding Crystal.
