WAS ORIGINALLY SEVERAL DIFFERENT BUILDINGS
THE COTTAGE BEHIND THE INN
was originally a PEEL TOWER (Fortified House)
and is the oldest building in the valley.
It was once the WHITE BARONY
as opposed to the BLACK BARONY
on the other side of the river.
The interior and roof were destroyed several times in Border Raids
The only original parts left are the five feet thick walls
The scrolls on the roof ends denote the importance of past occupants
THE BAR AND RESTAURANT AREA
were once a row of MEDIAEVAL COTTAGES,
WORKSHOPS AND GARDENS
The end building now the BAR AREA was a SMIDDY
for shoeing horses, the big double fire now partially
built in was where the horse shoes were heated.
There are still locals alive who remenber horses being shod there
The original old blacksmiths tools are on the walls
of the inn and the anvil is beside the fire place
The RESTAURANT AREA was the garden to
the end cottage, now the kitchen.
In MEDIAEVAL TIMES the main road into Eddleston
ran between the PEEL TOWER and this row of cottages.
The new main road now in front of the Horse Shoe is
comparativly new, less than 100 years old.
The new road was built at about the same time as the Railway,
which before closure ran on the other side of the river.
Across the main road to the left stood the MANSE,
the present main road was once the Manse Grounds.
The House Next Door with internal courtyard was once
the Manse Stables and Carriage Houses.
THE HORSE SHOE BEDROOMS
Were for 110 years the village school
In 1998 they were converted into bedrooms
The whole internal structure was removed
The old school consisted of two large classrooms
and two cloakrooms. The bedrooms now have a
three star tourist board grading
