REVIEWS

We're Hot - We're Rockin, Pollytone 17 fabulous tracks from a band that has made shock waves on the scene. Hot Rockin' hit the stage at Hemsby to a great crowd and with a sing-a-long on the encore they were fantastic. Cleethorpes had never seen this or heard this band yet they were the only band to fill the floor with a dynamic performance. I have to agree with the audience, I've never seen such a power house of rockin from a new band for ages.
The CD is very good, buy it. For me, go see them live.
+ Best new band for ages

HOT ROCKIN' - We're Hot, We're Rockin'
Pollytone PEPCD 135

Hot Rockin' : In Your Dreams : That Love Word : Strings To Your Heart : Wild Man, Can Ya Bop, Can Ya Boogie : Pipeline : Long Blonde Hair : Rock Your Blues Away : Juke Box Junky : (You're So Square) Baby I Don't Care : Come On Home : Eager Beaver Baby : Baby Slide On : So Meets The Fall : Don't Cry Baby : Rockin' Daddy. (Playing time: 51:55)

Hot Rockin' are hot and, in the immortal words of Sam Phillips, when we say hot we mean hot, lit at both ends and burning in the middle. Mr. Personality plus, Dave 'Porky' Coates - 250lbs of joy - leads a band which is steeped in the tradition of rock n roll. They've already drawn enthusiastic comment in NDT for their appearance at last year's Teddy Boy Weekender and just last month they got Hemsby off to a great start. This second CD not only lives up to expectations, it exceeds them.
The range is truly remarkable. Signature tune 'Hot Rockin" is a pounding rocker with guest Little Richard on piano (no, I don't think it's him but you never know). 'In Your Dreams' is country rock n roll and so authentic it's almost American, whilst 'That Love Word' is a ballad with a beat and is pure 1950s. Three tracks - three very different styles, each one presented to perfection, and not just with technical perfection but full of the vim and vitality of rock n roll.
And so it goes on -'Strings To Your Heart' is doo-wop, 'Wild Man' is foot-stomping, harmonica-led r&b and 'Can Ya Bop, Can Ya Boogie', surely destined to become a club favourite, makes a lasting impression as a Slim Harpo bopper. 'Come On Home' is classic rockabilly and all that's lacking from 'Don't Cry Baby' is a little more 'heart on the sleeve' to make it classic late night honky tonk. 'Juke Box Junky', a kind of Wee Willie Harris 'Rocking At The 2 'I's', draws on the rock n roll favoured by the blues shouters of yesteryear. Incredibly enough the variety doesn't end there. Every track has its own unique appeal and it's even more remarkable that most of the tracks are Dave Coates originals. When the time comes for a "Best Of Hot Rockin" compilation, the problem will be to decide what to leave out. Hot Rockin' are on the up and up. Up till now, the Midlands and East Anglia has been their main stomping ground, but it can't be long before Europe and the rest of the UK calls.

There are an awful lot of good, young rockabilly bands on today's British scene and I was very impressed with the talents of an East Anglian quartet who go under the name of Hot Rockin'. With their own elegant backdrop behind them, the band varied their 50 minute set well with songs and styles that included the excellent slow bluesy version of 'I don't need no woman to tie me down', the strolling 'Teddy boy boogie' and solid up tempo versions of classics such as 'One hand loose' and 'Flyin' saucers rock 'n' roll'. The band fully deserve their genuine encore and took pride in hitting the audience with a couple of songs from their Carl Perkins catalogue; 'Matchbox' and 'Honey don't'. There was a nice touch to their finale when the band brought out dozens of sticks of Cromer rock to hand out among the crowd!

HOT ROCKIN'
Rev it up

As far as I'm aware this is the first record release by fairly new group Hot Rockin'. The album kicks off with the old Hank Snow number 'Golden rocket' (Movin' on), and is played at breakneck speed. This is followed by the first of four original songs from the pen of lead singer Dave 'Porky' Coates. The other originals include 'Stop talkin' and start lovin', 'Groovy Miss Ruby' and 'A woman's spell' which has a lively chorus. Another couple of song's I liked are 'If I ever' and 'Tennessee boarder'.

In their live show, Hot Rockin' demonstrate they are capable of injecting variety into their act, so it's just a question of arranging it in the studio. A good first album which will help establish the band in the minds (and feet) of dancers outside Great Yarmouth.

Winners Hot Rockin get
recording session prize

NORTH Norfolk group Hot Rockin' are hot property after winning a regional band competition.
The four-piece Cromer-based rock and roll outfit beat three opponents in the final to land a recording session prize.
Leader David "Porky" Coates said: "We were over the moon to reach the final - we were ecstatic when we won it."
They beat second placed heavy rockers This Wide, their spot middle of the road band Adam's Creation and new wave rockers Cloudminders in the final at the FM International contest final at the Brickmakers pub in Norwich.
The band formed around 18 months ago after the break up of rockabilly band Mr Big Feet, which also featured singer guitarist Porky and his drummer brother Johnny.
They are joined by lead guitarist Chris Finn from North Walsham and bass player Kevin Fuller from Norwich in a line-up just releasing their second CD.
The band has been busy working in pubs, clubs and rock and roll weekends, along with doing charity gigs.
They have some big events lined up, playing in a Yarmouth weekender in November to 2-4000 people and a Hemsby one next May attracting up to 6000 people.
This weekend the award-winning band can be seen at an "all dayer" at Spixworth Village Hall on Saturday alongside London headliners The Houserockers and Norwich's Small Town Giants.
Tickets £7 in advance from Porky on 01263 512318, £8 on the door.
