Established in 1971, the Humphries Weaving Company are today the last
commercially operating Hand Loom Silk Weaving unit, in England
The company is based at North Essex in the DeVere
Mill in the picturesque village of Castle Hedingham. This is where we process our raw silk and
custom dye each colour required. Plains, Jacquard and fancy weaves or woven
on the company's 12 historic looms which date back to the 1830's.
DeVere Mill houses all our quality samples, cuttings, and the company Archives containing some 6,000
textiles.
Pre weaving processes, soft silk
winding and warping as well as Jacquard Hand Loom weaving are all carried out at this
location.
90% of our fabrics are made in pure silk, however a comprehensive
range of many additional fabrics including cotton, wool and linen are also available.
Every single order undertaken, is classified as a
special and is therefore woven specifically to the customers individual
requirements, in term of design, layout and colour, with 20 metres being the minimum
requirement.
In addition to supplying many forms of special-width
plain and figured silks, the company specialises in reproducing ancient textiles,
including documented cloths for the historic houses and palaces, of both this country and
abroad.
From an ancient trade, which survived for almost three hundred
years, the Humphries Weaving Company are today the sole inheritors of the silk weaving
traditions of Spitalfields.
