The Guitar.

The Guitar is obviously the most popular of the fretted instruments and the variety of styles is vast. My particular style of Guitar making was largely influenced by the time I worked at " Fylde Instruments " some 20 years ago. I have yet to come across better built Guitars and see no reason to change the techniques learned there and refined over the years. It is enough to say that the Guitars I make will have the right sound and playability according to the players wishes. I make two stock designs- a fingerstyle Guitar approximating the Martin 000 in shape, and a Dreadnought size which suits the plectrum player. Amplification of my guitars is generally achieved via the " Headway " systems which contour the sound for true acoustic reproduction or optionally, variable EQ systems of the highest quality.

The now standard "Dreadnought" design of guitar is ideally suited to the needs of the plectrum player. It gives the power, tone and projection that is difficult to achieve from smaller guitars.

My standard model plectrum guitar has a mahogany body, spruce soundboard and ebony fingerboard.

The string spacing at the nut is 40mm. which facilitates clean fingering for very little extra effort and the sounding string length of 630mm. gives maximum ease of play with the heavier strings suited to plectrum playing. The headstock is designed with more clearance behind the nut to allow comfortable playing in the first position.

Great attention is paid to the contour and relief of the fingerboard and the result is minimal fret buzz with a low action. The heavy flat pick style of the Country player is easily catered for by fitting a slightly higher saddle.

Once a guitarist is ready to buy the ultimate guitar, the playing style and requirements are known but still most guitars promise all things to all players. I have developed what I believe to be the ultimate guitar for fingerstyle playing.

The body is based on the "Martin 000" which has a deep waisted body to sit comfortably on the knee. The body is normally built from mahogany with a cedar soundboard. The soundboard is slightly thinner than the plectrum guitar and the bracing is lighter but more complex. This gives an incredibly fast response allowing amazing clarity and tone to be achieved with ease.

The string spacing is 38mm. at the nut allowing plenty of room for clean chords in the lower positions and the slightly longer scale length of 640mm. means that light strings give a good tone. As in the plectrum model, the carefully built fingerboard results in a whisper low action without buzz.

As the tone quality of my guitars is achieved through build and material quality, there is no requirement for the complicated on board EQ systems currently in vogue. A simple volume control is all that is required and this is normally fitted by the heel on the upper bout.

This guitar was custom built with a wider fingerboard as the customer wanted greater clarity when playing within chord shapes. It is only slightly narrower than the classical guitar and is an option not usually offered.

The guitar has a walnut body and spruce soundboard which combine to give a warm yet bright sound with superb sustain.
