  Carriera was a famous Venetian miniaturist and pastellist who revolutionized
 miniature painting by her introduction of an ivory base while also producing
 beautiful pastels of young ladies, often with a mythological theme.  She made
 pastel portraits fashionable, achieving spectacular success throughout the
capital cities of Europe, particularly with her visits to Paris (1721-2) and
Vienna (1730).
