Itz4U - the Help Desk & Jargon Buster!

Welcome to you if you're a newcomer to the 'Net

We'll try here, to give you a few guidelines on using your Browser to get the most out of the 'Net, as well as enjoying it. For words you're unsure about, see 'Jargon Buster'.

How to get started? Just single click on any of the Navigation buttons at far left, to see the Itz4U pages.  If you hover over any link (pink & underlined text)  the mouse cursor turns into a hand, and the link changes to blue - to show it's a link to somewhere else! After clicking, it will change change colour to red, to show you've already selected that one!

All Itz4U pages have links to help you easily move around the site. For example, you can return to our 'Home page' by clicking the Home Page links. Each page also has Top of Page links to quickly get to the top again.

You can also move back & forwards in your web browser, by clicking its BACK and FORWARD buttons, to see pages previously viewed.

TIP: Use your mouse on the scroll bar at right - you can click the Up/Down arrows, or 'grab' the bar and move it with your mouse, or press the Up/Down arrow keys to see
more of our pages

For loads more useful information, why not use our 'Hints & Tips Machine' on our Hints & Tips page? Just click the page button at far left

Fed up with your browser always opening with a web site? Then change it: Open Internet Explorer, click on 'Tools', then 'Internet Options'. On the 'General tab' click 'Use Blank' then click OK. Now you'll have a nice clear screen!

How to disconnect from the 'Net? Double click the 'twin PCs' icon at bottom right of your screen, then click 'Disconnect'.

Is the page you've clicked taking far too long to load? Then click the 'STOP' button on your browser, then 'Refresh' or 'Reload' button to try again.

Want to view an earlier page? Click your browser's 'BACK' button until you find it.

Typing a web site address in the Address Bar? To quickly select the Address Bar, press Alt key and D together. Now type in the address, such as www.itz4u.net then press either Enter or the GO button.

Confusing web site address? You might come across 'http://www.xyz etc' - just ignore the 'http://' bit - most browsers insert that automatically. Occasionally, you may see an address like this, 'http://xyz.theirname.etc' - type it exactly as it appears, even though the 'www' bit is missing - it is correct!

See a graphic you like on a web page? To 'grab' that graphic for yourself, right click on the actual graphic itself - a pop-up menu appears. Click 'Save Picture As..'. In 'Select Picture' window that appears, click 'Save' - usually on to your Desktop.

Impressed with a site, and want to visit it again later? Then 'Bookmark' it by pressing Ctrl key and D together, or right click on a blank part of the page, and click 'Add to Favorites' or 'Bookmark'. To re-visit, click your Browser's 'Favorites' or 'Bookmarks' button and click the site address.

Worried about the phone bill while on-line? Dial-up surfing can be expensive if you stop to read through everything on a web page(s). To reduce the cost, when a page has loaded, don't read it, just click on any links you want, to load other pages. When you've seen enough, disconnect from the Net. Now you can view all the pages you visited, as they're stored on your PC - but now you can take your time, as BT is not charging you!

View web sites you've previously been to? You can view these pages off-line (without being connected to the Net), by clicking on your browser's History button. You'll get a list of dates and web sites visited. Click the one you want to view off-line!

Off-line viewing? To maximise the 2 tips above, you need to configure your Browser. For Internet Explorer, click 'Tools', 'Internet Options'. Now, on the 'General 'tab in the 'History' section, click the small up arrow to increase the days to say, 30 or 60. In the 'Temporary Internet Files' section, click 'Settings', and move the slider to the right to increase the amount of hard drive space for storage of web pages to what you can afford. 100 to 150mB is ideal if you have spare capacity. Netscape has similar settings.

Want to delete old web pages from your hard drive? For Internet Explorer, click 'Tools', 'Internet Options'. Now, on the 'General 'tab in the 'Temporary Internet Files' section, you can click 'Delete Files' to delete ALL web pages, and/or, in the 'History' section, click 'Clear History' to remove the record of sites you've visited. You can't delete selectively! It's all or nothing!

Do you BT's Call Minder or Call waiting? These can cause problems. For a solution please click on our Hints & Tips page at far left.
