THE
LEIGHTON ASPELL FAN CLUB was formed in 2001, we have members from Scotland
to the South East of England. The club is fun based and is not a tipping
service. We have been featured on Sky Tv’s Attheraces and are very well
known to all the presenters. The club is run by one person John Fairbrother,
and started off with just a handful of members. Because the club is run
by a one man operation the number of members had to be limited to 100,
to keep the running costs down. Membership is just £10 per
year and for that you get a monthly magazine with news, views, competitions,
profiles, track facts, members naps table, and a report on all Leightons
Rides.
The
club also do a large range of top quality merchandise of which no
profit is made, all proceeds go toward the running of
the club. Any money left at the end of each will
go to the Injuried Jockeys Fund.
Leighton’s best season to date was 2003, he had
59 wins, 59 seconds & 64 thirds, giving a profit to a £1 level
stake of over £60. He also rode in his first ever Aintree Grand National,
bringing home Supreme Glory second (40/1). In 2001 he won the Welsh National
on the same horse . Leighton was born in Ireland in 1977, he came over
to England as an apprentice to Reg Hollingshead in the Midlands, he was
then a flat jockey. But, Leighton is a big lad and weight was a bit of
a problem. He moved to sussex and join the team at Josh Gifford in Findon.
He is a very underestimated jockey mostly riding very modest horse but
he always gives 100%. Trainer Pat Murphy once said, “ I always use the
best jockeys, but if Leighton isn’t available the second best will have
to do so I’ll try and get McCoy”. Leighton should be getting better rides,
but no matter what he’s on we will be following him .
